okay so i was wondering what the most famous cover band was

at first i thought it was probably one of the sublime cover bands

then i realized

ELVIS is undoubtably the most famous cover band
almost none of his songs are origionals

can you think of any more famous ones?

There are a lot of very famous cover bands. Hayseed Dixie, for example.

Or in another sense, the London Philharmonic don't write much of their material

Just because you cover a few songs does not make you a cover band, the beatles, tesla, the jackson 5 and elvis all played many originals as well, making them not cover bands.
Anyway, the msot famous cover band i can think of is the dark star orchestra (grateful dead cover band).

I think you're misunderstood. He only WROTE 2 or 3 songs and had professional songwriters write his other tunes. He did do some covers though: Blue suede shoes, hound dog, Amazing grace, etc...

Wow it's pretty hard to beat Elvis.

But I *heard* that Nirvana started out as a Zeppelin Cover group.

Half of the bands that people are posting aren't even cover bands. Doing a cover here and there doesn't make a band a cover band. Anyway, I would say Australian Pink Floyd.

Camp Freddy is a pretty famous covers organisation, although the line-up is ever changing.

The most famous covers-only band I can think of is Slash's Blues ball, which is a band Slash put together that toured the world just playing covers like AC/DC.
