Alrighty, my bass player friend and I have been watching a lot of Metallica videos on Youtube lately and he's dying to know what kind of settings Rob Trujillo uses on his Ampeg SVTs.

So what does he do for that snappy tone?

(Also, I think Metallica use lots of mid's to sculpt their guitar tones, he thinks they uses little, if any)

What do your ears say think?

I would say scooped mids, aggressive finger style playing, brand spanking new strings, active j pickups, and Rob Trujillo.

I lol'd. TS, I just messed around with my amp a little and found a setting that's similar to his. My gear is an Ampeg SVT Classic with an 8x10 and a Spector Euro 5 (all maple). The most vital part is a treble-y active bass with a set of new (or close to new) strings. After that, my settings look like this:

Bass: 5
Midrange: 6
Frequency: 3
Treble: 6

Volume and Gain as needed, but I'd use the Gain more than the Master Volume control. On the bass itself I have the bridge pickup solo-ed, the bass at about 5 and the treble pushed as hard as it will go. I get very close with this.

Buy both pickups. Rub icyhot on both of them. Sandwich your penis between them and walk to the nearest homeless shelter with your brand new icyhot penis sandwich.

While Kirk and James have their mids scooped, I believe Robert boosts mids to stand out in the tracks. Well maybe not so much in Metallica. but in Suicidal Tendencies, mids are definitely boosted.

Is there such a thing as a heavy riff with out chugging on the e string?

Man just tell your man to play with his own tone, eventually he'll understand enough to figure out trujillo's tone, but maybe by then he'll dig his own tone too much to care

matching some ones tone is near impossible. my teacher told me this story, he knew a guy who worked at this guitar store in ann arbor Michigan, that happened to have at the time, the legendary blackie Eric Clapton strat. one day, non other than George Harrison, the beetle guitarist. he asked to play blackie, used the exact same equipment as Clapton. and he still Sounded nothing like Eric. when George asked if he forgot something, my teachers friend said ( and he says this is the time he got to correct a beetle) that the tone is in your hands. so you might be able to match his tone with all the right stuff, but it is very hard.

He also uses, or at least used Zon basses, which had graphite necks.

It really does depend on which tone he is actually trying to copy, as he's had a fair few different ones through the years.

I think he's referring to the win that is the tone in this video.

That's a Fernandes Gravity 5 Deluxe being played in that video.

He used a helluva lot of different basses last night.

Most notably, 5 string warwicks with J pups.

Strings are always fresh, like, probably came off the press a few days earlier.

Really aggressive fingerstyle, and a beast of an overdrive.

Never really liked Metallica, then I saw them last night, I have to say, im a fan now.

Fender Standard Jazz Bass

EHX NYC Big Muff

I saw them live last week and he used almost exclusively his Fernandes' as far as I can remember. Just for the record.

Look up a few videos on youtube, there are at least a few basses he uses that you couldnt blame people for thinking are Warwicks.

I find that doubtful seeing as hes endorsed by fernandes.

Maybe he just uses them for 1 or 2 songs.
