The bridge is too high, and I need to lower it. Is there anything I can do besides take the backplate off and tighten those screws that are there?

but, that is how you do it...no other way, unless you want to keep your bar pulled up all the time which would look more retarded

well...you could use these (i don't know the english word...)(Invalid img)
Use the smallest one...but that will ony work if you have the right bridge...something like that...

just screw the little srews down...but this is not for drastic changes
...Fender + Ritchie Blackmore = hours and hours of GREAT music and guitar execusions...
