Hey UG,

Now I know everyone suggests Fender Jazz basses and for good reason I have one.
I have a Fender Jazz 5 string and now I'm looking for a good 4 string. Now what I'm wondering is I want a nice bass but should I just get a Jazz 4 string or try something new, I seem to only really like the sound of fender jazz and if anyone would like to suggest a nice bass that's NOT a fender jazz it would be much appreciated!

Thanks =D

Budget doesn't matter, I'm a workin' man I'll save

The only brand I despise is Schecter.

I play in an Indie band but I don't need somethign that fits the genre, just a nice bass.

^Hmmm, I don't know about that now but I've always wanted to try a good Warwick. First Warwick I picked up I didn't like the feel of the neck but that was 1 bass and my hands have gotten used to a lot worse things now.

^Haha, I figured I'd get questioned for that. I've tried the Custom, Elite, Studio, and the Schecter 004 one and I wasn't impressed.
I just don't like the sound of the higher strings. The A, D, and G strings bother me the most, it just makes my skin crawl I'm afraid. The low B didn't sound appealing either just sounded like a floppy mess.
Maybe they were all bad basses but if 5 in a row are all bad then I'm not interested in trying another one.

If you really like the Jazz, I'd say go try out a Jaguar. Same basic feel, same basic tone, but some added goodies to play with.

fair enough. the higher strings do sound kinda different. not that different, but the thinner the string, the clearer, no matter how high you go.

Rick is a good idea. but expensive.

try G&L, active jazz basses, Warwick, Pedulla (if you can save 3,000+ anyway), Musicman, Ibanez ATK, fretless jazz basses, and anything you see.

Maybe try a spector if you can get your hands on one. Schecter are amazing! You must have been playing it on a behringer or something... Because the quality for the price is pretty much unbeatable.

^ haha yeah I used to never like fenders but as my ear became more and more picky for a certain tone Fender just delivered.

I don't think they were dead strings, 4 of them were new the 5th one was a bit older but I still didn't notice a good sound. And I had not been playing out of a Behringer haha, I was playing out of an expensive cabinet my friend has. Sorry to keep shooting Scheters down but its why I hate them haha.

If you play in an indie band, maybe go for a P bass? I have a J and I'm saving up for a P bass, cause it's a different tone, and playing with a pick on a P bass sounds awesome.
I'm a Fire, and I'll Burn.Burn.Burn.

I agree with jonn0 and insano, if you like the way your jazz is then you can't go wrong with a precision or a jaguar

I say no to the jag, on basic feel. nobody likes a sticky neck. nobody.

The only think about the P Bass is I can get a P sound out of my jazz. So it seems kind of like a useless buy, so far majority says Rick and I have always wanted to try one but the Guitar Center that's nearest me is terrible and they barely have anything.

I need to plan a trip soon so I can look for all these basses haha.

you won't get as accurate a precision sound. it sounds much better from a p bass.
