Yep, as the title says, I'm looking for some good strings for Drop A tuning, as I really want to play some Nile. As far as strings go, I'm thinking DR, but what gauge would be suitable? Will 11-50 cut it, or something else.
I use a BC Rich S.O.B guitar.
Cheers.

I'd go with at least a 12 set, probably 13s.

I play in standard tuning with 11-53's and they get a bit buzzy when I go down to C. Maybe try Ernie Ball's "Not even slinky"? I believe the E string gauge is .65 or something ridiculous. I know you don't always need the thickest string EVAR for detuning, but it's really a lot easier to deal with a slightly thicker string than it has to have to deal with fret buzz.

You want atleast a set of 12s. I play drop D with 11s, they were just about useable at drop C but any lower and I might as well have shouted the riff into the pickups.

wow, thanks. i just discovered Nile and they sound awesome.

anyway, is keeping your guitar in that tuning for a long period of time completely safe? wouldn't it loose too much tension? or not

As long as your guitar is set up properly (truss rob and all that) it should be fine.

I happen to know that Karl Sanders from Nile uses a wierd set of strings, I think the gauge is something like 10-70 so he can get huge bends on the high B.

OK, so the general consensus seems like either 12 or 13. Thanks, guys.

i used a 60 on the bottom to go to A, buy a standard string set, then string the guitar one postion higher than u usually would and put the 60 where the low E string would go. it works
#12
I just bought a 0.62 for my low B, and it's perfect in drop-A. for the other five strings, just buy a pack of Power Slinkys or regular slinkys and use the bottom five

12's or 13's for complete drop A tuning

My low E is tuned to drop A and my A string is tuned to drop D and I have a 60 and a 52 on there with the rest of the strings in standard tuning with normal 10's.

buying a 7string set is the best way to do it!

And whats all that about a wound G-string? I've never had any 7string sets with a wound G-string?!

If you take the 6 lowest strings you will get B E A D G B and then just drop the low B to A
you will get better string tension this way because the strings are made to be low!

^+1, a 7 string is a much better decision seeing as you won't lose your high notes by down tuning into baritone guitar territory, but if you're going for the Nile idea, then that's fair enough.
I use a 70 for the low A on my 7 string, so 13-70's is my recommendation. Jim Root uses 11-56 for drop A on his Telecaster, so it's all preferance really and a set-up on your guitar and you shouldn't have any problems after that on fret-buzz issues and action problems.

I was in drop a for a while.

I used 12's for all strings except the low e in which i bought a 60.

I use a strat tuned to dropped B, with 13-65 gauge strings. I take a set of 10-46s, throw away the 10, and use a bass string for the low B. I think I need to use lighter treble strings, because the 13-26 are a bitch to bend. They don't have any decay in pitch when notes are held, though!

The point is that you'd be using a D string in the G string position so what is normally an unwound G would end up being a wound string.

Well Slipknot tune down to Drop B with an 11 - 56 or 58 set, so maybe a 12 - 60 set?
