Everyday there seems to be someone asking for PC help in The Pit. So instead of having multiple threads everyday I thought it would be a good idea to have a dedicated thread, and yes I did use the search bar.
People can also ask for help on buying new computers and hardware upgrades and other such things.
Hope this works out.

This is actually a good idea.

In the start menu run the msconfig program and choose what programs you want to be started when Windows starts.

Good idea..

Is there any type of program out there that can disable processes that I don't need running? I know task manager can take them away, but that's just temporary.

I've been wondering this for a while..

You can go to "Run" in the start menu and type "msconfig" and configure the programs that start up when you boot the computer up.

EDIT: lol beaten to it. Some processes are used by a program eg. disnoted.exe is started by itunes. No idea what it does though.

i dont think so but when you start up your computer i think if you ctrl-alt-delete straight away and end the processes you dont want running then i dont think they come back?

GREAT IDEA FOR A THREAD

If you mean from starting when you log on, do the following:

Start > Run > Type msconfig > Startup Tab > Uncheck the ones you don't want

The only rule is, if you don't know what it does, look it up or don't touch it!

EDIT: Beaten to it

well for that do start->run->type msconfig->startup
you may also want to disable unneeded services(go to services tab for that)

Read the forbidden threads sticky, this has been done.

That's odd. I've never seen it before in my life. I guess this will get shut down then.

EDIT:Why aren't people directed there with all the PC Help Plz threads made daily?

Yeah, but seeing as there are always computer questions every 5 seconds....

I've been lurking since '06.. I've never really seen a "The ONLY PC question thread". If there is one, I've never seen it active at least!

The Computer Thread

There it is.
It hides itself pretty well.

More RAM would do you well my friend. Make sure you have the right type of RAM for your motherboard before you go out and buy it though (DDR or DDR2) Judging by the year of your computer I think it might be DDR but check just to be sure.

dont close this thread, the other one sucks.I just checked it out,lol i have 512 of ram baha does that suck.. 08ers suck, except march 08ers,there the best...

Okay.. sounds good.

How do we get it on it's feet again.. or at least have the 08ers use it?

Throw them at the forbidden threads thread. Or bitch at them till they use it. It's only been inactive for two days. I just think it's weird that not many people have heard of it. Heid's an 04er and he obviously didn't know about it. (Correct me if I'm wrong Heid).

I'd like to keep it around too. The other one isn't really labeled as a help thread just a computer thread.
Try another 512MB stick. I'm running Vista Home Premium on 1GB RAM with a 2.8 Celeron and a 256MB Cheapo video card and I'm having no problems.
Do you use your computer for anything really RAM consuming like Photoshop or gaming?

ldl67 is right, this thread is against the rules.. and there are two kinds of 08ers:

1) The 1337 ones (like me)

and

2) The weak!

Use the System Information tool. It will tell you everything you need to know about your computer. You will find it in accessories.

It's not cool to rag on 08ers. Most of them are just new to the forum and aren't fully familiar with how we do things around here.
I'm not that far behind being an 08er myself. Nov 07 is only two months before 08 started kid.

Yeah it's OK to post the name. I think. Try looking on eBay or in the Green Guide for a laptop if you get The Age newspaper where you are. You can get some decent laptops for that price range in there.

EDIT: Sorry about the double post to anyone who cares.

OK, so I want to buy some more RAM to speed up my computer (I've tried everything else). How do I go about doing this? I know next to nothing about computer hardware.

What you can do is take out teh ram in your old pc (its the chip thats long and thin) and take it to your local computer shop and say "I need 512 mb of this ram"
Easy.

Crucial are a decent brand for memory, and they're cheap, too, so I'd recommend looking at their RAM. They have a system scanner, so you'll be able to find out which type of RAM you need, (DDR, DDR2, DDR3 etc.) if you don't already know.
Depending on your operating system, there will be a maximum amount of RAM that your system will be able to use.
Check whether your PC supports dual channel memory: if not, you'll have make sure that all of the RAM modules that you use are the same size.
As for installing the RAM, it's very simple: it's just snap-in/snap-out.
Hope this helps.

Where can I get this system scanner? It's a pretty old computer so I doubt it'll have any of this fancy stuff.

It's online, at the crucial website. All you need is IE, iirc it doesn't work with Firefox or safari.

If I remember correctly. Normally I'm a grammar nazi, but occasionally, I slip into abbreviations such as imo, tbh, iirc, etc. etc., purely because I'm a lazy cunt.

OK, done. Turns out I have 256MB of SDRAM, but I have 2 empty slots so I guess I can add some more SDRAM there right?
#38
yep, even though SDram is quite old school, you can probably find heaps on ebay or your local computer fair.

I'm guessing you don't have dual-channel support, then, so maybe get 1 or 2 1GB SDRAM modules, and take out the 256 card.

My PC is just too awesome, any ideas how to make it less awesome?

Edit.. BTW, be careful with RAM.

My PC before this was 7 years old and had early DDR ram, which is newer than SD. So be careful.

It should cost next to nothing if you find the right stuff though.
