I don't like the metal tones I get out of my Vox, but it might be decent for Maiden on the OD setting.

I don't think this would have enough gain for him, unless maybe he cranked it wide open, even then it will be ridiculously loud for home practice. With an OD, probably, but that'd be over his budget.

TS, the Spider actually might be decent for what you want. I'd look into a Roland Cube as well, try them both side by side if you can. In the end, it's what sounds good to you and not us, especially if it's just for practice, you're the one that has to live with it.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

Vox isn't good for heavey metal, either a cube or line 6 for heavy metal.
What I want in my rig (Bold = gear I have):
Ibanez SZ-520QM
Vintage VECJ100BK
Epiphone Dot
Laney VC15
Boss GE7
Boss SD1
Zoom G2

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=487051X

this is the best one out there
it can keep up with a drummer and also has pretty nice gain (for a bedroom amp) the cleans arent bad either

i kinda want one now itso cheap
edit:
i just realized i sent the scratch and dent model so if youi dont wana get used (personally i think you should) it'll be 150

the crate v5 is pretty much the same in tonewise but smaller

personallyi think you should get the used scrathdent v18 so you can get jam with a drummer or put on a small show without being to be miced

07 Fender American Deluxe Strat
07 Fender Custom Telecaster
09 Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster
09 Fulltone OCD V.4
10 Ibanez WH-10 V.2
09 Splawn SuperStock
10 Jet City JCA-20
97 Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

Yeh the SICK! bit sounds a bit stupid.

Even a used Epi VJ and a bad monkey aren't going to be as good as the crate V18. The V18 has decent reverb too, and is gig'able at 18 watts. And it does quiet pretty well for practice.
