yeah cant really go wrong with a ds-1 it delivers the distortion at a very low price and its really durable too

danelectro liquid metal sounds pretty good

But nothing beats the distortion from an amp... so the best distortion pedal is your channel selector lol.

i also like the sound of the ts9

and behringer sound suprisingly good considering their price

boss ds1 and mz are good choices, give digitech a chance aswell...not such bad pedals.I own a death metal that will be up for sale when I swap over to rack mount effects.

the best way to know that is to go at your guitar store and a couple of pedals then you'll know wich one is best for you

I really like those Blackstar tube driven ones. But what are you looking for. High gain? A booster? And what is with Ds-1s and bigg muffs as the "best" distortion pedal? They are good, but best? I'm not sure...
