I'd go Tubescreamer any day for the vintage drive, coupled with a tube amp, audio perfection.

Gibson Buckethead Les Paul & Peter Frampton Les Paul
Dean Razorback Slime Bumblebee
Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier
EHX Memory Man/Hazarai
Digitch Whammy
Sovtek Straight 4x12
Herdim Picks
Laney Linebacker 50 Reverb
MXR Phase 90

most likely the ds-1

The DS-1 is the most buzzy out of them. Tubescreamer easily for old school.

Ok, for something like Green Day tone, get a DS-1.

The TS7, TS9, TS5, TS808 or any variant of the TS all have the same basic voicing, very soft and warm high end, and big midrange hump. It will not give you the sharp aggressive attack you're looking for. Its an overdrive, its not a high drive unit.

Ideally, you get none of these and get a ProCo Rat or something similar.

I don't think spiders handle pedals all that well. That being said, the DS-1 isn't great, I've never played a DS-7 and I don't think a TS will sound very good wth a spider.
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not
