So my birthday is in January and I can get a new bass plus a new amp! So I'm looking around now for ideas on what I should get.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-SR300DX-Soundgear-Bass-Guitar-102661881-i1150627.gc

And I really have no idea what kind/brand of amp to get. So I ask you bass forums, should I get one of the basses listed? And what kind of amp should I ask for? (I'm open to any kind of bass not listed)

Price range for each bit of gear would be useful.

For Bass: Highest my parents will go is around $600
For Amp: Around $400 but anything lower would be great.

I would try to find a elite or studio schecter, AMAZING for the price.

what style/styles do you mainly play?

Classic, Alt, and Prog rock mostly and some metal.

well firstly, if your parents will go to $600, don't get any of those Ibanez basses. go for something that costs $600.
for those styles, i'd probably say the Precision but both of those Fender basses are versatile to different styles so maybe you should go to a guitar shop and try both of them, see which on you prefer.

Well I would personally spend around 600 on the amp, and 400 on the bass, give or take. If you don't need the range, a MIM Fender is good enough, and it is easily upgradeable. If you do need 24 frets, an Ibanez or Schecter might do well. I have a Schecter Studio and I really like it.

Ibanez SR for the bass

OR if you can find an old one with a bolt on neck, fernandes gravity delux

For the amp, kustom 200w

The Schecter comments are one's I totally back, especially IndianRockStar's. You can get a better amp with $600 and a better amp will make a decent $400 bass sound, well, better.

Ibanez basses are terrible...

no. you may not like them but you need some solid proof.

they're versatile, cheap, comfortable and relatively good looking. they sound very nice.

but the Schecters aren't bad. not that punchy as compared to the Ibanez, but good.

you can get a used G&L Tribute or upgrade Fender (think aerodyne or deluxe___special)

on amps, the 2 A's: Acoustic and Ashdown.

Does anyone else here think ibanez basses are really ugly...

anyway, for 600 I'd just go for a MIM fender, they have their reputation for a good reason.
