okay, can someone please help me?

yesterday, my vista PC crashed, and my laptop had a virus on it, and i couldnt do anyuthing on it, and i found this disk for another OS, it was Fedora core 5 linux.

i installed it and it seems pretty good, but it doesnt have any apps. I did some research, and i found out i can still run windows apps if i download this thing called wine. and i downloaded it, but idk how to install it.

can someone please tell me how to install it, and what exactly does it do?

ps. can someone tell me any good programs to install, and how to install them?

edit: i used the search bar and nothing came up

Don't use Vista, wait another 2 years until they iron out the kinks. That's what I did with XP.

linux is an amazing OS but its just not worth the headaches using it in a PC based world

You're far behind update to Fedora 7 < Last I heard about it started using Suse for a while then Ubuntu, thinking of going back to fedora soon though.

I forget what kind of packages fedora uses. Whats the extension/package type if theres no extension

No use the live CD and choose to format your entire drive. It'll do the work for you.

People who have downloaded XP may be interested in that.

Thankfull I have legal versions of VISTA I got for free through my school

That's why you download a volume licence of XP so you can update it. Btw my Vista installation is legal.

To TS, Fedora uses rpm packages, as opposed to Debians' deb packages. To install wine, download the rmp file, open up Terminal (or Konsole) - depending on whether you're using Gnome or KDE and type:
$ cd /home/download_directory

Or wherever you downloaded the file to.
and then type:
$ sudo rpm -i software-name.rpm

You will then be prompted to type your root password

Hit and enter and let it install. I'd recommend using Ubuntu for beginners though.

Edit: if you ever want to learn about certain linux commands, open your terminal/console and type
$ man [command-name]

man stands for manual, then press ctrl+Z or ctrl+Q to exit.

Double Edit:

Ubuntu already comes with Firefox, Pidgin, and OpenOffice. Plus it's easier to use with its Synaptic Packet Manager, you just search for software, and hit "install".
