I currently have fedora core 5, and i was thinking to switch to ubuntu

is this a good idea?

what does ubuntu have that fedora core 5 doesnt?

^Same. Fedora is awesome. Plus I really like the KDE 4 setup, GNOME is good but I just prefer KDE. If you absolutely have to use ubuntu or an ubuntu variant, go with the latest kubuntu, I think it's running KDE 4.1 now.
EDIT: There is a KDE 4.1 package available for kubuntu. But my vote still goes to Fedora.

Make Live CDs of each, and see which one is best for you.

Oh, and don't forget Kubuntu if you want KDE.
