I use Ubuntu more than any of the others... Just because it's a little more user friendly, IMO.

It just won't sync my phone, print off my printer, or work with any other peripherals I have

Not sure if you're going to accept this as an answer, but Mac OSX is the best linux based OS by far, without a shadow of doubt.

I believe they started from unix and some bsd code primarily

i.e.: it's not running the linux kernel

He won't because that is a Unix system but NOT a linux system.
Correct me if I'm wrong but OSX was built up from BSD's Darwin, so its technically a BSD system.

^ Thanks for the brief lesson guys!

Haha no problem.
I originally thought it was Linux as well.

Then, not because I hate macs, but just for kicks, because my entire College class is obsessed with Steve Jobs and anything apple, I learned all I could to piss them off
Its pretty funny they get sooo upset during arguments and I could actually care less haha
Even got our Assembly prof in on it making fun of them

So what's the difference between Linux and Unix?

I made the assumption that OSX was linux as it uses the superuserdo (sudo) command, as does linux.

In my experience, command line calls are very specific to the OS kernel, For example, Windows has CMD to pull a command line, whereas the IBM AS400 OS has CALL QCMD (I love the AS400 OS - all it's commands are VERB NOUN based ie WRKUSRPRF will Work with User Profiles etc...).

Well Linux distros are also a UNIX operating system.
There's slight kernel differences, as they are managed/written by different open source groups.
And the major difference is their licensing Linux follows a GPL license, where as the BSD one is much more restrictive.
Hence why Mac can SELL versions of BSD, where as with linux kernels that breaks the GPL license.

Open source and options for the WIN

Just don't get Solaris, my friend would kill me for saying that, haha but just don't do it.
