trade in my jumbo-fret bass, which i HATE trying to play, for a bass with a smaller neck, and smaller frets?

at the moment, i have an Eastcoast Jazz bass, which i bought for INT2 music about a year ago... but playing it cramps my hand up because of the stretches.

I was playing a friends bass for about 3 hours yesterday, and my hands were fine, is this because her frets were smaller?

Sounds like you have short fingers. In that case try out a Fender Jazz Bass, they have one of the thinnest necks I've ever played.

i dont think it's the thickness of the frets, it feels like its more of an issue about the spacing of the frets.

any suggestions for a fairly good, cheap bass -about 100 pound

I think you need to stop caring what people think about it. I stayed home all day today and masturbated like 5 times. Fucking blast.

Ibanezes (?) have thin necks and not jumbo frets

I can't believe you are whoring yourself out like that.

If you like the sound of your jazz, go with the Fender. Ibanez are worth a look too though. The necks are also great. My neighbor has sr500 (I think) and it has one of the best necks I've ever seen, even better than the one on my Spector (playability wise. I really like thin necks). I don't think the cheaper Ibanez necks are as good (my neighbor has one of those too), but they are still very thin.

about 100 pound

That's a little limiting, try out some Jazz Bass copies in that price range.
