So, I'm pretty much set on a G-400, I played a vintage SG in a guitar store and liked it (I know it's not the same, but I liked the shape and how it felt in my hand), but in case I play it in the store and don't like it, what are the alternatives (in roughly the same price range)?

I don't like the Goth G400, because it doesn't have all inlays, and so far I sometimes find it hard to orient around the fretboard without the inlays.

Try all Epiphones you find curious. Check out the Les Paul, the Dot, the Sheraton, flying V, Explorer, etc.

I actually played a Viper 400 in a store and loved it, but even a Viper 50 is more expensive than a G400, and the 50's are agathis bodys while the G400 mahogany, and I want to play metal.
I think I'd try the Epi V and Explorer though.
