I've been debating on whether I should get a desktop or a laptop for college.

I'm leaning towards on getting the desktop. I was thinking that I can just use the university's computers to get something done instead of lugging around a laptop or I can just bring my USB drive so I can take my work from home to school. Plus I would get better performance for the same money with a desktop. Plus I already customized my computer on Newegg just in case...

So is there any reason I should opt for a laptop for college?

It's just so much easier/convenient. If you wanna take your PC home for whatever reason, it means unhooking it all then setting it back up etc, with a laptop it's just putting in a case and going. For college you won't need a killer machine anyway, even a £300 laptop would get you through collage. You may also be strapped for space, and if you share dorms then other people could get on your desktop, but you could hide a laptop.
#3
You should definitely get a laptop, especially if you are living in a dorm. There are very limited space, usually. A good laptop will save you a lot of trouble.

I have a custom built desktop PC as well, but I'm leaving that at home and I bought a high end laptop for college.

It's really just a matter of preference, a laptop is much more convenient since you can take them to class to take notes and do your work anywhere, but if you prefer a desktop it's really not going to hurt you that much.

That being said, I'm on a laptop right now, planning on buying my own for school, and even with it not being quite as powerful as a desktop the convenience more than makes up for the slightly reduced performance. I'd suspect within 5-6 years Desktops will be obsolete.

go for the laptop, It was such a useful thing to have when I was in college. surfing the net during class(taking notes occasionally, finishing homework for other courses), being able to take it whereever you want. I don't even use my desktop computer anymore i just use the laptop whilst sitting in front of the tv eating cheetos and watching porn

Space isn't really an issue with me because I'll be living in an apartment. The issue I have with laptops are that they have to be replaced faster and they go out of date faster.. although laptop duels sound fun

yes... get a laptop... Its great for when you have to do group work in the library, you dont have to sit infront of the desktop... You know where all your files are and stuff on your computer... and especially in the dorm, it saves space.. you can sit on your bed and use it instead of having to be at your desk

Well, if you have a large room to yourself:

1. You lucky/rich bastard.
2. Bring the desktop for gaming, but still get a cheap laptop for work.

My MBP has 4gb memory, 8600gt, c2d 2.4. So I can do everything with one comp. That is the most convenient choice, but also the most expensive.

dont get a laptop, unless you're living on res, cause if you have the laptop in lectures, trust me you'll be on UG, or playing games, and you will **** up in class, it almost happened to me first year, i had to work hard when i saw the amount of fail in my midterms.

haha, I'll be rooming with my best friend so I have split costs

I have another question...

For those who take notes with a laptop do you find it easier to actually jot down the notes that the professor is saying? (not meaning faster being easier)

Depends what you're studying.

Business I'd just get a $600 special.

Engineering I'd spend upwards of $1000.

^ thats sick, man, symphony hall! which college?

Get the laptop. Much more convenient, IMO, because

A) It lets you take EVERYTHING you're working on for class, notes, etc. when you go to class or the library, so there's like .02% chance you can forget your work.

B-) Typing is more efficient than writing. It takes less effort and time to push a key in class then it does to write it down and copy it onto a flash drive. You're not going to have a desktop in class. Plus, less hand fatigue and its easier to lose paper than data on a laptop.

C) For the distracting thing, that's a self control thing. Like, should schools not have windows because you can look out them and lose focus? No, people eventually get over that and its not a big deal,
and it's ALOT easier to not bring up a website and go on a game site consciously then it is to not let your eyes wander subconsciously.

D- You won't be able to take advantage of the campus's specially designed wireless networking that is there to help students with laptops do work on the go

If you're a gamer or have no patience, definitely spend the money for a high quality laptop. It's worth the money.

I'm probably going for desktop because of the gaming and buying a real cheap laptop for microsoft office and research type stuff...

In my experience you won't be wanting to lug a 20-pound powerhouse 26" screen laptop around, IMO your best bet would be one of the "mini" laptops, like the ASUS EEE PCs. Perfect for notebooks and normal casual use.

Just what I've read on forums; that they're good for forum spamming, typing down school stuff, instant messaging, photo storaging, good 6-hour battery life on the 901 etc.. basic functions that you want on the go.

My boss actually has practically the same thing, except it's an MSI Wind notebook. The upside to that one is that it's got an 80 gig HDD, instead of 8 gigs.

He friggin loves that thing. If I can find one for a decent price I'm getting one for school too. I'm also bringing my desktop though.

It's processor is ****e, can't handle vista (you probably want XP anyway), backlight supposedly blows, waste of money. Spend the extra money and get a relatively light normal size laptop.
