You don't NEED one, but I recommend it since your sound quality will be very bad if you connect your guitar without a preamp. And the signal will be very weak.

depends on the software you have, I use a line 6 tone port, but you can get free pre amping interfaces that do the same job, just get a microphone jack and you should be fine.

i looked them up but on the diagram for the setup it showed something called line level gear. what is that

what you really should get is a fair interface with instrument input. Theres the m-audio fast track USB or you can go firewire with the PreSonus Inspire 1394.

these will take out latency and give much better quality. Interfaces are worth the price IMO
