I'm wondering what the main differences are between open and closed back cabs? Do open backed cabs sound a bit brighter? Thanks.

Open backed cabs can fill a room more because of well... the sound isn't all being focused toward the front. However, you also lose bass response and tightness as a apposed to a closed-back cab.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

I'm thinking since my Orange Thunderverb 50 is so bassy I may try an open back

You may like it. In addition to what Matrix said, I think the open back tends to offer more of a looser, vintage sound. Your choice of a specific cab, and the speakers inside it, will also have a lot to do with you final sound.
You Don't Need a halfstack.

You Don't Need 100W.

I was planning on sticking with Vintage 30's but that's not final...
