So I'm looking for a dirt cheap single coil guitar to play third-wave ska/pop-punk/indie stuff, and I was recommended the Melody Maker. I need two things: Opinions from people who've played them, and a link to a site selling the 2 pickup model in the US. If you want to recommend something else, my budget cap is around $300, because I'm getting a vehicle soon too and I don't want to spend alot.

hahaha I saw this thread and was like 'Wow, Andy and I were JUST talking about this, how funny! Maybe I should read it and see if I can find anything to help him...'

...then I realized it was you...again...I hate you, Andy.

Fender Strat? Squire Strat?

Used Fender Mexican Stratocaster.

Eh. Not so fond of the strat tone, I've played a few and they just never made me say "Wow, I should buy this".

I actually figured you'd say something like that.

The Melody Maker is a decent choice. Just be aware, there's a reason they're so cheap, you can't expect it to be made to the same standards as a full $2000 Gibson guitar is.

I think viable alternatives would be:
- Epiphone Les Paul Goldtop, comes with two P-90 single coils. Costs a little bit more though.
- Fender Jaguar. It's somewhat similar to a Strat, but the body has more wood mass to it, so it tends to have slightly longer sustain and a slightly heavier tone, and the 24" scale means they tend to be fitted with thicker strings too, again giving a slightly thicker tone. They're a good balance between a Strat and a single-coil or P-90 equipped LP (or SG, or other similar heavy-bodied guitar)
Yes, I know everything. No, I can't play worth a damn.

Well obviously, but I'm just looking for something that'll do the job I want it too, barre chords and pentatonic.

I would LOVE a Goldtop (A Gibson Goldtop LP is actually my dream guitar) OR Jaguar, but they're both out of my price range at the moment .

I might get it for slide. It's either that or a Tele, but I think a Gibson would be cooler for friends that come round.

Example.

"Hey, is that a Gibson"

"Yup, right next to the Fender"

"Niiiiice"

I had a 1963 Gibson Melody maker recently, that was a nice guitar, I would have changed the pick up on it, but I sold it on instead.
I think its only a matter of time before they become collectable
I sold mine for £512 about $1000 dollars or so

Well, first tipe i heard this guitar was when Slash used it live for slide playing.Just saw the gibson spot..It sound epic...so good..but if i look the clips were user did play it it sound really bad...

Try it.The Ebony and White are badass!

I own and very much enjoy a 2004 Melody Maker.

While the quality of Gibson's upper- and middle- price range guitars has gone down over the past few years, I believe that the lower- price range guitars - Melody Maker and others under $1000 - has not.

I feel that my '04 MM is worth every penny and then some.

Well it may just be up to the amp, they may have been playing through an MG but I have a Peavey 6505 combo that makes even my squier sound pretty foine .
