Mkay so I poked around a bit in the forums, and I didn't seem to find any threads about this. What chance is there for women to make it in the music biz? You see girls like Miley Cyrus and Fergie and Sarah Bareilles around, but not really instrumental or hardcore musicians. And the few times they do exist, it almost seems like they don't get enough credit for their work because of their gender. So pit, I ask you, what are your thoughts?

And women have every chance in the music business as guys. Personally, I don't listen to many male artists. All the artists I like are female. I just prefer female singing. Although male guitarists tend to be better at playing guitar, there are plenty of good female guitarists around. It might be just me but I believe my musical preference has really grown and I no longer listen to "guitar" orientated music (that includes anything rock or sub-rock) and haven't done for a good couple of years.
As I've grown, I just don't really care for rock music, blues, shred or metal etc etc. I'd much rather listen to some really mellow like Cantopop or Acoustic - almost always with female vocals. There is a huge female dominant area in Acoustic pop.

Also, I believe you're thinking in the wrong line of direction. Don't you ever think that you don't have a chance. A thought like that is dangerous and you may never achieve anything until you think otherwise.

Perhaps I should be more specific. There's not quite as much chance for women in the ROCK, PUNK, HARDCORE, etc... music industry as there is for men
#5
If you make good music there is no problem.

Don't use being a girl as an excuse because it just makes no difference.

Rubbish, that's where you are wrong.

If you dress like a "rocker chick" or whatever I am sure you will get attention.

Girl in a punk/rock/hardcore band = good novelty.

Maybe that's not how you plan on getting attention but it'd work.
#7
Though there seems to be quite a few women in the alt rock/indie rock genre.
Kim Deal, Kim Gordon, Billinda Butcher, and every bassist of Smashing Pumpkins come to mind.

There's plenty of room in metal though, women in metal are worshipped like gods. Go look up videos for Chthonic and half of the comments will be about how the bass player is "the hottest chick evar". Which I will not disagree with that

I saw this gfirl recently on youtube, chantel McGregor, who plays a sort of blues rock stuff, very technically able. She was told that gilrs don;t play that kinda music by the music industry inm britin, so there'[s your answer, there are stereotypes about what women play, hecne they get stuck doing that crappy acoustic country/pop crap, or lik avril Lavigne they start good then get turned ito the next teen queen. There are exceptions, Bonie Raitt, Joan jett, the Wilson sisters etc but that seems to be the general trend, for women to be "stuck" in certain categopries. maybe they like different music too?

When chicks watch a movie with Brad Pitt in it, are they talking about how well he's acting or how sexy he is?

Also, I've no idea who that is. Just that I'd love to tap it. I'm sure if you gave me a link to some music she plays I'd be more able to determine the quality of the music as well.

Got a point there. I mean where would Paramore be if Hayley Williams was ugly?

Anyway, women can find a place in punk or hardcore, just look at X or the Distillers. Also, indie rock girls can do quite well for themselves, such as Cat Power or Kimya Dawson (thanks to Juno).

it seems to me that most pop women never get respect because they ALL rely on their sexuality to sell records, even most of these women in metal bands are all just gimmicks to attract 15 year old boys to the band,

however there are a few women who are both successful and have managed to retain credibility and respect without walking around in corsets and mini skirts such as Bjork and Norah Jones. I personally find those two sexier and more attractive than 95% of the sluts you see daily on mtv,
pink floyd are better than you

That's called being a guy. Have you ever had a boyfriend, at all? I agree, it tends to be a tad bit annoying but you can't really change male sexual hormones. It's the way God intended it. You're forgetting that most of the PIT are about 14-17 which means they're in the prime of their puberty where their hormones get the better of them .

There are loads of women in the music industry. As for the instrumental side, Amy Lee from Evanescence is a great Pianist, Cristina Scabia can sing for Italy and theres that girl from Paramore...

It's called a compliment.

You're being overly sensitive, do you complain if a girl calls Justin Timberlake hot? I bet you don't because your one of these girls who talks about equality all the time but wouldn't complain when it's the other way round.

There are less girls who like metal/rock ect. so less play that sort of music, therefore less are succesful. Having a girl in your band is often actually an advantage, so you would get that advantage in whatever band you're in.

Stop inventing inequalities where there are none, because there are already enough (and not just sexist ones!) without you making more up.

People are giving you perfectly good answers which you are ignoring because it's not what you want to hear.

Ignorant, much? And, yes, I do in fact find it equally annoying when girls go gaga over fags like Justin Timberlake lol. But I find it more prevalent with guys and female artists than girls with male artists.

Look, people are telling you that women aren't held back because of their gender, why can't you accept that? It sounds like you actually want there to be.

Maybe it was a bit harsh of me to judge you without any facts, but i'm just fed up of girls who go on and on about sexism towards girls then ignore any towards guys. I mean, there's no such thing as a masculinist, that's not exactly equal.

Also, you didn't comment on the paragraph that answered your actual question, interesting...

Woman have a much higher chance of success in the music business than men do, simply because they are more glamorous and attract far more attention (Want proof? Look at all the losers that comment on the girls' pictures).

A female's skills are far more exaggerated than a male's.
