Use this thread also for general tips and advice for ordering metal on the internet!

Once they've bought all the classics and milked the local record shops for metal albums, the most avid metal fans will find themselves driven to the internet to satisfy their cravings. Whether you like black, death, thrash, doom, progressive or whatever, this is generally true. Specialist metal shops can be helpful, but even they cannot stock everything! And so we, the people of the UG Metal forum, thought it appropriate to create this thread, which gives a list and short description of various reputable record labels/distros that deal in genres all across the vast metal spectrum.

We will also include users' accounts of these record labels if the accounts make the label out to be exceptionally good or less than satisfactory. This list is continuously updated while the generous users of this forum work laboriously to bring you the best labels/distros as they discover them!

We've also included a list of distros/labels NOT to deal with, that is, they are known to be rip-offs, bootleggers, terrible packers, ridiculously slow, or a combination.

Feel free to add to this list by posting your suggestion in the thread. It's best if you post it including the link and a description that tells us what genre/s they specialise in and how large/rare their selection is. A vague idea of prices should also be included if they sell their stuff far below or above a normal rate (the normal rate being about 12euro/10USD/8AUD for a CD)

When trading, or buying for that matter, try and buy from first-world countries such as Canada, America, Australia, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan and Western Europe.

Buy from countries such as Ecuador, Malaysia, Indonesia, Peru etc at your own risk, not only are their postal systems dodgy, many of these countries literally have donkey-cart post services!

Recommended:

Abyss Records : quite good, got a good selection of black, death and thrash on there

All That Is Heavy : loads and loads of doom-related things

Aquarius Records : Based in California, USA. Excellent selection of black metal and stoner/doom, as well as a huge variety of non-metal genres. A lot of exotica. Prices for widely available black & doom cds are not competitive (~$15 US), but has some things here that are hard to find elsewhere. Stocks demo tapes by unsigned bands for pretty cheap.

CD Universe : It has a huge selection of all genres, excellent prices and speedy shipping. I've ordered from here on three seperate occassions. Highly recommended.

CM Distro : Good selection, covers most genres of metal

Dark Horizon : mostly black metal, lots of bands though.

Dark Symphonies : black metal and stuff

Deathstrike Records : Reliable, again is mostly focused on black/death/thrash

Eisenton : black metal. Good service and quality.

Grau (Germany) : 'has all the Prophecy Productions releases so a lot of dark metal/rock/folk'

Grind Ethic : grind label in the UK

Hell's Headbangers : big selection of black/death/thrash

Metal Fortress : Nothing special as far as music goes, but for merchandise (especially tshirts) it is pretty good

Primitve Recordings : Large death metal selection, small black metal selection

Northern Silence : (it's a German site, but there is an English version available too.) They cover a bit of stuff, black metal and a little doom

Nuclear War Now! Productions : Fast, reliable, re-releases lots of great stuff, mainly focused on black, death and thrash metal.

Pathos Productions : good selection of death metal

Razorback Records : has a big selection of underground death/gore/grind for mostly $10 or less and always free shipping.

Redstream : large selection, of black metal, death metal, doom metal, ambient, industrial and experimental stuff

Shadow Kingdom : Mostly heavy metal/doom

The End Records : a good selection of stuff ranging from the well-known to relatively obscure bands, seems to cover most spectrums of metal

Unique Leader : It's got a great brutal death selection.

Victorious Pirate : This company takes licensed band shirts and tailors them for girls. Good metal selection and distributors. A tad expensive but worth spending the money. You can also send in your own shirt to be customized. If you want a band that's not on their website selection they will find it and order it for you.

Vinyl Tap : "We are an online rare record shop for record collecting, specialising in buying/selling rare collectables of CD's, vinyl, promos, hard to find out of date rarities and music memorabilia."

Unreliable:

Dark Desires Productions from Colombia
Deepsend Records
Father Prod
GOATOWAREX <--- if he actually sends your stuff, it'll be a bootleg
Merciless Records
Miriquidi Production Germany
Painkiller Records
www.swedmetal.com - seem not to rip off Swedes, only people of other nationalities

+1.

It doesn't have a load of black metal bands that only 3 people have heard of, but it's still pretty cheap + fast delivery.

since i've pretty much stopped downloading ordering CDs has become my main way of getting music so this is awesome. I usually just use Moribund, so branching out a little could be good.

http://www.metalpricewatch.com/

this is a very helpful website for finding CDs and it also compares all the prices so it's easier to find the cheapest one.

Stoner-rock.com is a pretty good resource. Not as competitively priced as a lot of underground metal retailers, though.

I used to buy from Battle Kommand a lot because their service was good, but they seem to close their doors intermittently and reopen months later. Prices there are/were good, and the selection wasn't too bad, either.

Metalfortress Is good for t-shirts and stuff, not so much cd's what i can see, at least not something that you cant find anywhere else. But they have some nice t-shirts that is hard to find.

TPL Records This one is good for cd's, i dont know if they send outside of sweden but i guess they do seeing as the site is in english.

Thanks guys for your contributions, you have been a real help especially with stuff like doom/stoner and other stuff I wouldn't usually come across. Hopefully we can make this thing as broad and all-encompassing as the tastes of this forum!

Feel free to post any feedback on the labels/distros posted or one that hasn't been posted, not just 'yea it was good', only if it was bad or if it was exceptionally good, and I'll put the quotation in under the link to the label/distro.

One more thing is that it would be good if you could write in your post: Label/distro name (link) - description (the description should include basically how large its selection is, and the genre/s it specialises in)

Thanks guys, great job

PS Conservationist, if you could tell me a bit about that Abyss Records place, that would be helpful, I went to the site and it just confused me (maybe its just the early morning haha)

Yea Amazon sucks cuz you can't find demos limited to 10 copies from 20 years ago.

wtf are you talking about psychopathology
fact is they don't stock everything, whether its 20 year old demos limited to 10 copies or 2 month old LPs limited to 4000 copies...

i like amazon for (relatively) mainstream metal (cause its a lot cheaper than cd stores) but yeah, its selection is quite limited

anyone know of a good place to get some scandinavian melodeath like Mors Principium Est and Skyfire, amazon charges around $30 (at least) for some of these
#28
cdn records, they have good deals sometimes ie. buy 5 get 2 free, spend a certain amount and get a certain % off, and i've never received anything so fast off the internet before
My sig is better than yours

Not buying from Amazon, buying from sellers listed on Amazon. I've gotten some great deals on some out of print items from there.

well that's a pretty big difference from actually buying on the store.

I are retarded. The site I meant to submit before for sludge/doom/rock/stoner is www.stonerrock.com . Also has reviews and interviews, and carries a lot of rare band shirts from those genres.

http://www.morbidwinter.com/Nav.htm - lots of black metal, including Eastern European, but reliability is questionable; emailed them several times and didn't get a reply, but try your luck perhaps?

http://shop.northern-silence.de/ (it's a German site, but there is an English version available too.) They cover a bit of stuff, black metal and a little doom if memory serves me right. I got Warning and Pagan Altar from there before, anyway.

http://darkhorizon666.com/NEWSITE/NewStite.htm - mostly black metal, lots of bands though.

Eh, not really. When you search for something just hit the "xx Used & new" and it displays the cheapest first.
Anyway,

Razorback Records has a big selection of underground death/gore/grind for mostly $10 or less and always free shipping.

A quick note on Amazon.com, since it was mentioned before:

I hate to give away one of my best-kept metal-buying secrets, but I highly, highly recommend checking the "Used and New" listings for any album that Amazon carries. Amazon's own CD prices are terrible, but a lot of the dealers that sell through them have ridiculous deals on metal albums (if you're content to buy used, this is doubly true). My guess is that a lot of independent record stores let metal albums go for really cheap since they don't sell as well on the shelves.

This thread would be a great candidate for a sticky.

EDIT: I didn't realize the dude above me had just said that, but yeah. Check it out.

Moribund Cult has been demoted to Questionable, I was digging around and heard some less than favourable accounts of people dealing with them.

I tried to make this thing a bit neater, and I added in a few pseudonyms you would do well to stay the fuck away from when trading or buying.

hey MH, I don't know if this would fit anywhere under that list, but stuff from ISO666 records is considered bootlegs by some bands, as he seemed to rip them off and print a lot of copies of his own without telling the bands. It's something that people might want to check before they buy, that's all

Well that's why I've put Moribund in questionable man, I've heard mixed things. Thanks Emenius, I added ISO666 to the questionable list. Crush bootlegging scum!

Which reminds me, if you're gonna buy a Blasphemy hoody, best not to try ebay as itll almost certainly be a bootleg. Check NWN! and Ross Bay Cult Eternal records
