I want to actually write a solo and not just improvise but I have no idea where to start. Most of the time I will just solo within the scale and thats it, i'll use different shapes and arpegios sometimes but it all seems a bit mechanical. I want to be able to write a solo that is smooth, across the whole fretboard but I don't know what to do or how to start.

Just put the guitar down and try to get an idea of what you want to play in your head first.

Yep, it needs to be inspired.

Guitar pro. Seriously, it helps, especially with all the scales, and you can structure your ideas better too (imo).
