Arguments for Increasing the Use of Public Transport in the UK

I'm doing an argumentative essay on this subject and a little help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

It forces people to socialise.

Edit: *looks up* Oh wait no.

Um. Aside from the 'environment' and 'rising costs of fuel' arguments I can't really think of any. Tbh, I hate sharing a confined space with people I don't know.
#9
Yeah, that stuff I've got but I need something a bit more detailed. Maybe about specific types of Public transport? Comparisons?

EDIT:

The Social enviroment thing I don't have, which is good. Ta.

I could get to work without getting up at 6.30am. for that single bus at 8.14 that gets me there too early.

The tube runs in the afluent areas of london.

Include that, i don't care where just do it.

But it could be argued that one people begin socializing and acting civil to each other knife crimes would decrease.

Or the number of people stabbed would grow uncontrollably large!

That way, as long as i can stay alive, i'll actually get a pension that you can live off.

Use public transport - It's expensive, unreliable and smelly.

I can get unlimited bus transport in greater Glasgow for £13.50 a week, less if I buy a travel pass at a travel office, what, other than your legs, is cheaper than that?

The transport currently sucks. Trains are always late or cancelled, bus's are either over flowing or completely empty.

Not reliable.

A lot of improvements are needed, then a lot more people would use it :-)

Works out cheaper than cars etc. Anyone who says it doesnt obviously doesnt know about petrol prices.

Safer(ish) than bikes. Generally faster.

Better for environment.

You also learn to cope with very strange people better.

Would help if you tried to google some facts and figures.

Its quite the opposite here.

I can ride around on the busses all day for £3... It costs me that much to get a single ticket into town on the train.

Not when these huge buses with massive engines are running around with one or two passengers on, and increasing the running times of other motorists when they block the road to pick up or let down their one passenger.

Yeah, but if public transport provision was better there'd be less private cars on the road andd more people on said busses anyway (probably)

Have you got a young persons rail card?

For me an all day bus ticket is £3.20, £2.80 for a return (any distance) and the train is about £2.10 for a return to Glasgow on the train with a young persons rail card, about £3.20 without.

True enough I guess, but at the minute that isn't happening. My local council seems to think that the way to promote public transport use is to put buslanes everywhere, without doing anything to improve the actual service.

Then they seem surprosed that congestion has gone up. Well, it's a no brainer. Taking away road space from cars without improving any alternative service, forces the same number of cars to occupy less road space, hence, congestion.

Public transport is a more efficient way of transporting people. The train/bus uses little more fuel per each user, whereas with a car a whole new 3 tons of metal has to be started and moved around just for one person.

Trains use less power, because they don't have to deal with hills or roads, they flat tracks specially made. Cars and buses get stuck in traffic, and the way they move around means that they don't get good mpg because they don't hit the efficient speed and stay there unless they're on a motor way. a train travels at a more efficient and constantly level speed.
