Is there such a thing as a heavy riff with out chugging on the e string?

I've only had experience with the Boss SYB-3 Bass synthesizer effect. I don't know of any guitar ones.

Midi pickup? What the hell?

I know mindless self indulgence uses synths. Never known too much about synths though

I really would prefer to find a pedal to do it because its much easier, but otherwise,

would something like the Line 6 FM4 work?...and how WOULD I work it. It seems as if its suppose to be plugged into a computer or something

Also, are there any other cheaper reliable options if the above linked product is able to produce such a sound?
