so i want to increase my alternate picking speed alot... would the thing to do be to alternate pick with a metronome all day or is there only a certain amount of time per day that one should work with a metronome?

you should really always work with a metronome or drum machine when actually playing if you can. learning fast is useless with out correct timing.

+1 (slight alteration). Practice with the metronome as much possible - not just for alternate picking but for all your practicing.
