Like he wanted to incorporate a legendary riff into his song. It's not like he was stealing it. Now go be creative. Run along.

RHCP - Dani california = Tom Petty - Mary Jane's Last Dance. Not completely the same chords. RHCP uses a Dm instead of Dmaj but it is the same strum pattern.

with 6 strings and 24 frets it's not that hard for music to be similar, no matter the genre.

Is there such a thing as a heavy riff with out chugging on the e string?

everyone's kinda stealing from each other. But who can do it best?

a million riffs can be similar. It's what's different about them, and more than that. One group is famous. One isn't.

i completely disagree with all of this, there is almost unlimited unique music, but when you are writing within the extremely narrow context of pop rock type stuff, and not even considering doing anything new, of course you will come up with the same riffs as other people, and in that case you may as well just borrow them directly anyways.

so i dont really hate them for it, but i do think its boring weak sauce for people with that little creativity to be money making pro musicians.

What Noel Gallagher does isnt that big of a deal. He's even stated that its more of an homage to the original artist, and that he'd have no problem with another band using any of his riffs/melodies/lyrics. If he claimed that all that **** was his own work, than thatd be wrong. But he's always been honest about where his music comes from. He just gets attacked more because he's one of the only artists that admits to doing it...

You can take a riff from an old song and use it to make a completely new song. its hard to be real creative and sound good while doing it. Thats why most bands stick to the tried and true methods of powerchords, openchords, and pentatonic scales.

I got another idea. Sometimes I imitate some artists for the sake of making my point. For example, I while ago I broke up with my girlfriend, badly, and I was pretty mad about it so I wrote a song and made it sound like Taking Back Sunday because that was her favorite band. I think that isn't really stealing but just a way of making a point.

It pissed me off when some gay emo band had ripped off of Motley Crue's Kickstart My Heart

LoL.
Just because Mick Mars can actually play guitar, doesn't mean Motley Crue aren't every bit as gay as any "gay emo band." Just because emo sucks more, doesn't mean hair metal sucks less. Remember it.

And to be fair, Noel admits to ripping people off readily. It's about the quality of the music man. And Oasis are feckin' quality...man.

First off TS, if you are going to do this.....do it right.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajr8czteaIQ

and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrL9N62eaQc

are the correct songs.

Second of all, using other riffs and stuff I find perfectly okay if done tastefully. Noel Gallagher admits it and embraces it. It also gets people interested in his musical influences. Check the beginning of Don't Look Back In Anger and Imagine. And It's not just rock it's every type of music, done by every artists. See John Williams or the old theme from Burton's Batman movie.
"They say rock n' roll is dead well not while I'm alive it ain't" - Liam Gallagher

"It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors." - Oscar Wilde
