I also know that alot of people who give a crap only hang out in one section of the forum. so what i am going to do is make this thread in every genre related section of the forum and post the results back here so that we will all know what people think

Subgenres are important for classification. I hate it when people get really picky, but as a general attribute, it's pretty helpful.

I love subgenres.

And I can love sub-subgenres.

But, IMO, it's when people are so choosy that they resort to sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-genres.

Unless, of course, you're talking about Blackened Progressive Melodic Death Metal, then I see no harm.

they are useful if you ask me.

you cant tell me there is only a small insignificant difference between say, Metallica and Amon Amarth, that shouldnt be distinguished by a sub-genre.

Whalecore!

Seriously, I think we have more than enough now, though granted a lot are important some are just ridiculous, "hey guys, lets take an existing genre and throw another adjective on the front of it because we're all unique pretty flowers!"

Sub-genres are important when you are referring to differences between bands and similar things, but people can really be pricky about this.
Got a question about Baritone guitars? Feel free to PM me.

Thanks to UG, I converted from Metalcore to some "real" Metal.

Oh right, they started closing your threads. The one in the punk forum is closed anyway.

For sure.

Though, I don't think we'll ever be as successful as Grim Bizkit.

I think people too often confuse people making up sub-genres with people describing a band that still fits into the original genre pretty well but has a unique element of sound in them. When lots of bands start using that sound it's a genre but some bands are just unique and somewhat weird.

Like unless I start seeing a million Flamenco sounding Suffocation ripoffs I'm not gonna call Iberian Death Metal a sub-genre anytime soon.

SO if Janne and Alexi did a gay porn, would I be the only one willing to buy it?

That's a dumb question, you know everyone in here would buy it too. I know I would!

You are wrong if you are against them. Blind Guardian sounds nothing like Cannibal Corpse even though they are both metal.

The -core genres can get ridiculous though. Some of the bands just use (random word)core.

Hmmm..... intruiging.

I'll procrastinate as long as I can, then give you a "well worked out" riff for our forthcoming EP at the last second, jamming it inconveniently into any song needing space filled whenever I feel like getting around to it, then.

there's is no such thing as a general genre.
no such thing as just metal, just hard rock, just punk.
actually, if you think about it, these are all subgenres of the ROCK genre. NOTHING can be classified as just ROCK. no!!! rock and roll is a subgenre of rock.
Jackson RR5 ivory w/ EMG 81/85
Jackson DX6 w/ SD Distortion & Dimarzio Super Distortion
Fender Starcaster Sunburst

Delightful. I'll be working on lyrics about drinking games in frat parties and how awesome (/sarcasm) they are meanwhile.

The funny thing is, if i think hard enough about that, and really focus on it in my head, i can actually hear what that might sound like.

IMO, bands like ACDC and GNR are "Rock." unless you want to name them "hard rock." which I believe is totally unnecessary.
