I already know how to make it sound older by taking the bass out and such, but how do you get that grainy effect (like on a vinyl record)? Is it an effect, a background recording or what?

white noise on a phase shift, turn the volume low?
My Gear:
Gibson Faded Flying V
"Dante's Inferno" Iceman
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 112
etc.

I can't imagine anything worse than shagging to Mark Knopfler.

Maybe shagging Mark Knopfler, but that's about it.

I know there's a vinyl grain plugin for protools.

A cheaper solution is to use a bit of EQ and cut the high and low end from the tracks. It'll sound more old school straightaway!

I'm pretty sure you can use a plugin. Another option is obviously to use some vintage equipment (probably out of budget though).
