looking over the Music Theory FAQ Guide. I understand it all until the subject of shapes is brought up, i can not understand shapes nor figures for the life of me!
could someone please explain how to read them?

|R|-|o|-|o|
|-|-|o|-|o|
|-|o|o|-|o|
|-|o|R|-|o|
|o|-|o|-|o|
|R|-|o|-|o|

aswell as...
Figure 1
|o|-|-|o|
|o|-|-|o|
|o|-|o|-|
|o|-|o|-|
|o|-|o|-|
|o|-|-|o|

so how do i read these for example?

"Figure 1" is a pentatonic scale. the "o"'s are where you put your fingers to play it. in the other one i'm guessing "R" means the root note. You can apply these shapes to any part of the fretboard.

I myself had to think for a bit before realising what the shapes were on about!

think of it as a fretboard.

Out your fingers where the o's and R's are.

the R's mean root note.
