VOX amps are usually low-mid gain british sounding amps...
heavy sound usually commes froma high gain modern sounding amps...

Won't really get it from a Vox, but if you're trying, cut the mids to about 11 o clock, lows to about 3 o clock, and add the highs in from ZERO until it sounds good to you. YOu can get a heavier, chunkier sound out of crappy amps by boostin bass and cuttin back on the mids a bit - gives it more rumble.

Buy a new amp. Go with a Peavey.
Do you feel warm within your cage?

And have you figured out yet -

What model amp is it?

Probably something like:

Bass - 5
Mids - 4
Treble - 5 to 6

That's basically the exact EQ Andy Sneap used when re-amping the guitar tracks for JFAC's Genesis album. On the crunch channel of the 5150 mkI.
Think there might have been a tube screamer in there too.

Gain: 7-ish? Depends your amp.

Be careful not to overgain it. Don't undergain it either. For metal tones in general, you wanna push the gain to the point where it's a saturated tone, and palm mutes are sustaining and keeping their thickness.

Tighten up with a tube screamer to preference ;]

And to add to this..
If you don't want or need usable cleans, get the regular 6505.
You could probably get a used 5150 on ebay cheaper aswell btw.

The 6505+/5150mkII's are fizzier. Less of the huge low-mids that make the mkI such a apocalyptically brutal sounding amp.

He can get a second-hand 5150.

Whether that's a statement of Brian May's apparently poor finances (doubt it, the man could buy a small country) or a statement of how expensive 6505s are, you're wrong either way.

Although it has nothing to do with the question in the thread, I think it's worth pointing out that webbtje has the best quote sig ever in the history of UG. Maybe even the world.

Are you being serious?

I was pointing out that just because hes playing a Vox doesn't mean he cant afford a 6505 as stated in the quote.

True.

Jerry from JFA mods has a bunch of facts about 5150s on his forum, and what he says ****ing goes.
