Hi all here on UG. I've been recently trying to learn some scales like the major and minor scales. The problem is, I've never taken up any music classes and I don't know anything about music theory. I've learnt to play through playing songs and stuff but that doesn't help me with my song writing. A friend told me to simply memorize the positions of all the notes on the fretboard and then memorize the notes of the scale, then I'd be able to play the scale out. Is this a good way to actually learn the scale and improve my song writing? Any suggestion would be great. Thanks

That's kind of a topsy turvy way to do it to be honest - first thing you want to be doing is learning more about what scales actually are and why you should be learning them...read the Crusade articles by Josh Urban inthe Columns section.
