I've really been diggin RATM lately. I went to a friend's house today and since he didn't have any RATM in his computer I started to watch of their videos on youtube. I clicked on the video of "Bombtrack" and the video actually made me mad. It makes Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path), a Peruvian terrorist group, look like the "heroic strugge" as the video says, of the people against the horrible US backed government. Yes, they were a group that started a war against the government. Yes, the government was a US puppet, but it was definatelly not a heroic people's movement. It had less than 15% of support from the people because of their violence which killed around 35,000 people (the majority were Quechua speaking indigenous people). There's a huge distortion of the truth here. Also, it's kind of ironic that they sing in support of Sendero Luminoso and then sing about indigenous people's rights and the Zapatista movement.

Morello's father was a leader in the MoaMoa(spelling?) movement which ousted the British from Kenya whilst also being cruel to locals that opposed them

Well, I just made this thread because the video kinda shocked me, it's as if they would of made a video saying that Al Qaeda is the Islam people's movement and then start prasing it...i wish they could of witnessed all the destruction, killings and torture that Sendero Luminoso has done here.

Pretty much. They say "arm the homeless" and all these communists things, but they have videos on MTV, songs on Guitar Hero, probably loads of money... I like their music though.

if this organisation is so horrible and they glorified them in a video, I'm sure there's an interview somewhere where they explain that. Contrary to the rest of the pit, as it seems, I do have the impression that they usually know, what they're talking about.. although they really like money!

Also, if you don't find anything, write them an e-mail, who knows, perhaps they'll respond..?

There was a thread on something like this a while ago...

I think there was a general consensus that when there's quite extreme views, you just can't trust them. When it comes to politics you can trust no one, but with extreme views, people will do anything to make you believe them.

A band with a song called '**** The Police' is the type of band who's politics I do not trust

vv Kudos on your honesty Mr. Urik!

Already looked for interviews and found nothing...an email? I doubt they'll respond, anyways, it's pretty clear that they support Sendero Luminoso, specially since Tom Morello named his Tele "Shining Path"

I did not know that *embarassed*

Still, you get the point...it's good music, it's just that statements like that have no credible ground. Yes, there are always gonna be people in positions of authority who abuse their powers, but there's also some people who do great work and make the world a safer place. Tarring them all with the same brush is just ignorant

Shows what you know.
They didn't actually write **** the Police. Band called NWA did if my memory serves me correctly.

And for info on the song...
The song refers to Rage's political views regarding the revolutionary war against the oppressive US government officials and the leader of the Shining Path organization in Peru, Abimael Guzman. Guzman was imprisoned and the song reflects on the moral wrongs on how the Peruvian natives have been treated.

Hardly glamourising the Shining Path there.

I lived in Lima, Peru for three years, and I can tell you that the Shining Path definitely did NOT have the support of the people. RATMs just going to do anything to try to be controversial and socialist and get kids who think they're rebels against capitalism to shell out money to buy their records. I like their music, though.

Ok, we get it, you like Rage, but it'd already been pointed out that it was an NWA song, and that doesn't really make much difference who wrote it, it's a well-known representation of their views.

As a band they are controversial for controversy's sake, and the thread is actually going by the video. TS thought the song was cool, but he thought the video glamourised the shining path

The video says "For 13 years, the people of Peru has waged a revolutionary war against their oppresive US backed government, their movement is known as the Shining Path, or Sendero Luminoso"...The terrorism done by Sendero was definately not a "revolutionary war" by the people of Peru, the video is distorting what actually happened

hardly controversial, then again it doesn't take much in hyper sensitive America

i mean come on you guys got all worked up about Russell Brand

well im not sure to the reasons why they covered that song, as i heard Morello make mention at their rally outside the republican convention centre that the police are not bad- but a tool of the system (or words to that effect)

however, i would concur with NWAs statements on the police constabulary

Their views aren't as radical as RATM's, and they explain them in the liner notes of their albums; they've never gained huge amounts of mainstream recognition and as far as I can tell, they've never attempted to; How does the way someone dresses have anything to do with their political views or lack thereof?;etc...

Yeah, that's why I'm so crushed! For me, Tom Morello was always the guy who really does something instead of just singing about it! And now he calls his guitar Sendero Luminoso..

Also, what am I going to do with my beloved RATM T-shirt?

Well, I'd say that they have done some rather controversial stuff, for example the 'Sleep Now in the Fire' video...and I don't really see the point, seeing as a lot of the people there were just stock brokers and such who'd had their working day interrupted

Russell Brand has nothing to do with this

And the police keep you safe whilst you sleep, if you have a problem with them as a whole, then you're probably a criminal
