I was wondering if someone could explain how chord shapes should be played with a capo. For example I'm trying to play San Diego Serenade by Tom Waits.

It is saying put the capo on the first fret. So from there do I make the chord shapes as if the capo is the nut of the guitar. For example does the A chord shape remain the same but get played at the third fret instead of the 2nd? Thanks for the help and I hope this isn't too confusing.

Yeah, generally. Sometimes the actual chord being played will be written above the words/notes with the shape to use with a capo in parentheses.
