I thought of this little hypothetical while on holiday, but I've yet to ask the intellectual giants that dwell in The Pit.

Picture this:

The country you live in is a fascist dictatorship, but it has many positive effects, the quality of life is high and rising, you can buy a lot for your money, you have a better life than you did when your country was democratic. The country is a strong political power with many assets.

But:

A certain minority is being exported, used as slaves and exterminated; but their treatment does not affect you. You have no vote, or freedom of opinion, and if you do publish/say something which goes against the Government you will be arrested, imprisoned without trial and sent to a work-camp where you will most likely die.

So, if you stay quiet and act accordingly with the Government's rules you will prosper, you will have a comfortable life, but you live with the fact that millions are dying for your life.

Or, you join the Resistance movement, try and make a difference and install democracy in the country again, even after democracy failing before. You will most likely die and will never be safe, but you're making a difference and you're doing the right thing.

What would you do?

What you described was not a benevolent dictatorship. They sounded very mean.

Well technically, they're not dying for me. And that's not benevolent at all.

if they were going against a minority, I would try to do something.

Although the problem would be that as long as the people are doing fine, they'll be behind the dictator and so a revolution would probably fail. People tend to care about money, not about morality..

i wouldn't try and over throw the government.

because despite the injustice being done by them, they have the power to destroy me and i can get by quite happily without dying.

and if i do fight for the resistance and die trying, but they are succesful in the end. what satifaction will i know/feel from helping those people? i'd be dead. whereas i could be alive if i did nothing, so it's a bit of a no brainer from my point of view.

i guess you are talking about America, the soldiers sent to Iraq and Afghanistan as being the minority; Guantanamo being the concentration camp. The freedom of speech is being refrained by the media, by selectively showing stuff, according to some interests. Voting can be just a lie, which you cannot prob change.

There actually was a city that was ruled in this manner. I'm not sure about the punishments and such.

Actually I don't remember much about it at all, I just remember reading about it in my history text.

But the city was rather open about people leaving. Their policy was that anyone who wished to live in the city was allowed. However if anyone was out of line, then they had to suffer the consequences. The difference was that the city also allowed people to leave the city at their free will.

No, I'm not talking about America, actually, you may see similarities, but I was mainly thinking how very few resisted Nazism at the beginnings of Nazi Germanay.

There are so many versions that you may as well have typed some variation of it out from memory. Or you could've just typed "First they came" into google.

Well, most of Germany did it, because the Gestapo would have torn out their fingernails if they'd said nasty things about Hitler.
I can guarantee that few, if any PitMonkeys have lived under a dictatorship, and most are kidding themselves.

Agreed, it really takes a vast amount of courage and strength to join the Resistance under a brutal regime, and I hope that I would be able to, but I doubt it.

The Nazis ruled by fear. If we're going on sheer numbers, the Gestapo weren't that powerful. "Most of Germany" could've taken them.

EDIT: What I'm saying is that logistically, the resistance makes sense, although I don't refute the idea that we could all be talk and when it came down to it, few of us would actually have the courage to rebel.
