Does anyone have any punk songs that the lyrics hit you hard or can just absolutely relate to..

Well I know it's no secret
I'm a drunk just like you
As I sit here counting the change in my pocket
To get a drink and try to forget you

So many days I questioned and I wondered
Wondering what did I do wrong
Cause mama said it was all cause of me
You left that Friday night and never returned

And every day
I prayed and I wished and I wondered
When you would come back
When you would return
But I found comfort and courage
Inside of a bottle
Now I don't care if you return

I grew up alone with no direction
I learned about life the hard way
Made mistakes and learned about rejection
I was a kid out on the streets running astray

I began to look for my place in life
Cause I knew I didn't fit with every one
I was the kid with no father and no Monday
But I found a home in my guitar and my songs

And every day
I prayed and I wished and I wondered
When you would come back
When you would return
But I found comfort and courage
Inside of a bottle
Now I don't care if you return
Now I don't care if you return

I'm the one by the descendants gets me

I'm the one
I've been here for you all along
I'm the one who's shoulder you've been cryin' on
Nice guys finish last, no one knows as good as me
We're just good friends and you come to me for sympathy
You tell me that I'm not your type
Still you call me late at night
Everytime he picks a fight
After all he's said and all he's done
I'm the one
I've been here for you all along
I'm the one who's shoulder you've been cryin on
He's a total dick that's the truth and you know I'm right
From everything you say theres no way he'll ever do you right
You love a man who treats you wrong
You think you'll change him but you're wrong
He'll use you he'll say so long
After all he's said and all he's done
I'm the one
I've been here for you all along
I'm the one who's shoulder you've been cryin on
I'm the one who wants you more than anything
You don't feel the same way you made it clear to me
But I'll stand my ground and maybe you'll hear what I've been sayin
After all I've said and all I've done
I'm the one i've been here for you all along
I'm the one who's shoulder you've been cryin on
I'm the one i've been here for you all along
I'm the one who's shoulder you've been cryin on
I'm the one

I don't know if you like me but it's true
I'm totally retarded for you
May look like it, but I'm not sniffing glue
Or having my mom tell me what to do
It always seems to be one day up and one day down
But I'm anticipating the day when you'll stick around
I'm all screwed up, the girl's got me all screwed
I'm all screwed up, the girl's got me all screwed
I'm all screwed up, the girl's got me all screwed
I'm all screwed up, the girl's got me all screwed
Oh yeah
Disgusted and moping, all bummed out
All I wanna do is sit and pout
I don't know if you like me but it's true
I'm totally retarded for you
It always seems to be one day up and one day down
But I'm anticipating the day when you'll stick around
(Chorus)
All screwed up
She's got me all screwed up

Thanks now I feel like a pansy

Personally, I go with Rock 'n' Roll Suicide by David Bowie and Because the Night by Patti Smith, though I'll save some forum space and just put up Bowie.

Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth
You pull on your finger, then another finger, then your cigarette
The wall-to-wall is calling, it lingers, then you forget
Ohhh how how how, you're a rock n roll suicide

You're too old to lose it, too young to choose it
And the clocks waits so patiently on your song
You walk past a cafe but you don't eat when you've lived too long
Oh, no, no, no, you're a rock n roll suicide

Chev brakes are snarling as you stumble across the road
But the day breaks instead so you hurry home
Don't let the sun blast your shadow
Don't let the milk float ride your mind
You're so natural - religiously unkind

Oh no love! you're not alone
You're watching yourself but you're too unfair
You got your head all tangled up but if I could only
Make you care
Oh no love! you're not alone
No matter what or who you've been
No matter when or where you've seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
Ive had my share, Ill help you with the pain
You're not alone

A few years back, I'm the One by the Descendents was totally a killer though.

Poison Heart - The Ramones.

Probably my favourite Ramones song.

Mind you, I don't like them that much.

West Side Highway by PINHEAD GUNPOWDER.

I've allready posted the lyrics before but they're so awesome I'm gonna post them again:

There's a million Jews in New York
And I'm one of them!
There's a million stars in the sky
And a million cars on the West Side Highway

Back at home, I didn't feel this free
Up and down the boulevard, I could hear them scream
"Hey faggot", "How much?"
"I'm gonna kick your ass mother****er"

But I held my head up high
Let them suffocate and die
In their ordinary lives

There's two hundred punks in the park
And I'm one of them!
There's a place to go
After all these years of feeling alone

Back at home, walking down the street
People pulled their kids aside
Like I was some kind of disease

But as much as I tried to hide
And plug my ears it hurt inside
It curled up and wounded my pride

There's a million Jews in New York
And I'm one of them!
There's a million stars in the sky
And a million cars on the West Side Highway

As I ride, I can feel the street
Like a river, it flows rapidly
Through the city, it propels
Me towards a tragic, bloody crash oh well

An inch from death seems to be
The only place to find some peace
The only place to ride a bike and
Feel alive and find a sense of pride
And dignity
HELP ME I'M TRAPPED IN A HUMAN BODY!

Scarred for life, what a sight
A generation with no hope
This concrete jungle
Can be rough

Street punk Oi!
Street punk Oi! Oi!

They're on the streets
Breaking the rules
From broken homes,
We're nobody's fools
The legion's out tonight,
The kids are looking for a fight
Nobody seems to care,
You can smell the fear in the air

Catch 22 - "Arm to Arm"

Another ****ing day,
it's still a nine to five, I swear.
I don't want to reach the top.
I don't want to be a millionaire.
I know that it may sound crazy,
but it's driving me insane.
Staring out the window of another ****ing train.

[Chorus:]
We're walking...
Arm to arm. I won't follow.
Arm to arm. I won't lead.
Arm to arm. Beside me until tomorrow.
Arm to arm. You're walking arm to arm with me.

I'm feeling kind of homesick
when I smell the old pine tree.
I felt you in the breeze,
I close my eyes, it's not so easy for me.
Once or twice, three times a charm.
We were walking arm to arm.
I wanted that for so damn long,
but now it's gone. I've never been so wrong.

(Drop me a line.)
Tell me everything that I've been missing.
(Won't you drop me a line.)
Tell me where you're gonna be when I get home.

2000 years more
won't end this war, my brother.
Half empty, half full.
You're pushing, I'm pulling.

Back in '96, sometimes I sit and reminisce.
Took the train to Hoboken, I didn't know it then, but that is
when I found my place outside this so-called structured life.
Married to my only love and music is my wife.

[Chorus]
I'm the type of nigga that's built to last
If you fuck with me, I'll put my foot in your ass
See, I don't give a fuck cause I keep bailin
Yo, what the fuck are they yellin?!

Common Rider - "Deep Spring"

Do you recall the long spring days
we used to make love just to pass the time away
hand in hand by the corner of the sea
when no one was looking we dove into the deep

[Chorus:]
Do you think of me sometimes?
Did I slip your mind?
I always return to the deep deep spring

If you have the time I'd like to take you back
'cause the same sun sets by the same train track
Do you recall the day you said to me
"souls like ours must touch to be free"

[Chorus]

I'm so close to you
just like we used to do
now I know that everything we ever said was true
All I know are trains and the fading of the light
Forever in a zero hour
between the day and night

[Chorus]

There is no one I could ever love like you
I'm the type of nigga that's built to last
If you fuck with me, I'll put my foot in your ass
See, I don't give a fuck cause I keep bailin
Yo, what the fuck are they yellin?!

The Gaslight Anthem - Blue Jeans and White T-Shirts
We are the boys from Little Eden
We are the hardest Saturday nights
Drank from the fountains of the fireworks
Sweat and bone for a better life

We like our choruses sung together
We like our arms in our brothers' arms
Call every girl we ever met Maria
But I only love Virginia's heart

And we sing with our heroes thirty-three rounds per minute
We're never going home util the sun says we're finished
And I'll love you forever if I ever love at all
Wild hearts, blue jeans, & white t-shirts
With wild hearts, blue jeans, & white t-shirts

Some things, babe, they never told you
Some things papa doesn't like
Spend a lifetime just to get over
You always said my mama tried

Still we sing with our heroes thirty-three rounds per minute
We're never going home util the sun says we're finished
And I'll love you forever if I ever love at all
Wild hearts, blue jeans, & white t-shirts
With wild hearts, blue jeans, & white t-shirts

So tonight I'll call you from a fourth-street payphone
But I'll sleep on the beach if I ain't got a ride
Someday I'll buy you that house on Cookman
We could sleep on the beach all night
Sleep on the beach if we ain't got a ride
Sleep on the beach all night
Sleep on the beach all night
Sleep on the beach if we ain't got a ride...

The most recent song that had an emotional effect on me was Andrew Jackson Jihad's "People II: The Reckoning"

Nobody knows everything
We know this to be true
Everything is difficult
Except what's in front of you
But it's complicated even under your nose
Bullshit math equations
And your highs as your lows
And your manic depression
It comes and it goes
Your parasympathetic nervous system reacts
And you're in fight-or-flight mode

How's the world so small when the world is so large?
And what made the world, could I please speak to who's in charge?
Everything is real but it's also just as fake
From your daughter's birthday party to your grandmother's lake
And your bi-polar Elvis, it comes and it goes
You parasympathetic nervous system reacts
And you're in fight or flight
You're in fight or flight
You're in fight or flight mode

I've tried to know which words to sing so many times
And I've tried to know which chords to play
And I've tried to make it rhyme
And I've tried to find the key that all good songs are in
And I've tried to find the notes to make that great reason begin

But there's a bad man in everyone
No matter who we are
There's a rapist and a Nazi living in our tiny hearts
Child pornographers and cannibals, and politicians too
There's someone in your head waiting to ****ing strangle you

So here's to you, Mrs. Robinson
People love you more, oh nevermind, oh nevermind
In ****ing fact, Mrs. Robinson
The world won't care whether you live or die, live or die
In ****ing fact, Mrs. Robinson,
They probably hate to see your stupid face, your stupid face
So here's to you, Mrs. Robinson,
You live in an unforgiving place.

Jett, Because the Night is a great Patti Smith song, as is Birdland, but "Dancing Barefoot" is just my favourite and still makes me shiver:

she is benediction
she is addicted to thee
she is the root connection
she is connecting with he

here I go and I don't know why
I fell so ceaselessly
could it be he's taking over me...

I'm dancing barefoot
heading for a spin
some strange music draws me in
makes me come on like some heroin/e

she is sublimation
she is the essence of thee
she is concentrating on
he, who is chosen by she

here I go and I don't know why
I spin so ceaselessly,
could it be he's taking over me...

[chorus]

she is re-creation
she, intoxicated by thee
she has the slow sensation that
he is levitating with she ...

here I go and I don't know why,
I spin so ceaselessly,
'til I lose my sense of gravity...

[chorus]

(oh god I fell for you ...)

the plot of our life sweats in the dark like a face
the mystery of childbirth, of childhood itself
grave visitations
what is it that calls to us?
why must we pray screaming?
why must not death be redefined?
we shut our eyes we stretch out our arms
and whirl on a pane of glass
an afixiation a fix on anything the line of life the limb of a tree
the hands of he and the promise that s/he is blessed among women.

(oh god I fell for you ...)

It's so hard to find a song of hers that doesn't send chills down your spine! Another one of hers that really gets to me is Break It Up:

Car stopped in a clearing,
Ribbon of life, it was nearing.
I saw the boy break out of his skin.
My heart turned over and I crawled in.
He cried, Break it up, oh I don't understand,
Break it up, I can't comprehend.
Break it up, oh, I want to feel you.
Break it up, don't talk to me that way,
I'm not listening.

Snow started falling,
I could hear the angel calling.
We rolled on the ground, he stretched out his wings.
The boy flew away and he started to sing.
He sang, Break it up, oh, I don't understand.
Break it up, I can't comprehend.
Break it up, oh, I want to feel you.
Break it up, don't look at me.

The sky was raging, the boy disappeared,
I fell on my knee
Atmosphere broke up, the boy reappeared.
I cried, Take me please!

Ice, it was shining.
I could feel my heart, it was melting.
I tore off my clothes, I danced on my shoes.
I ripped my skin open and then I broke through.
I cried, Break it up, oh, now I understand.
Break it up, and I want to go.
Break it up, oh please take me with you.
Break it up, I can feel it breaking,
I can feel it breaking, I can feel it breaking,
I can feel, I can feel, I can feel, I can feel.

So break it up, oh now I'm coming with you.
Break it up, now I'm gonna go.
Break it up, oh, feel me, I'm coming.
Break it up, break it up, break it up.

Delirium of disorder
Delirium of disorder

Life is the sieve through which my anarchy strains,
Resolving itself into works.
Chaos is the score upon which reality is written,
The timeless, swirling gyroscopic horde.

Delirium
Delirium
Of disorder

Yeah! I am just an atom in an ectoplasmic sea
Without direction or a reason to exist.
The anechoic nebula rotating in my brain
Is persuading me, contritely, to persist.

Delirium of disorder
Delirium of disorder
Delirium of disorder
Delirium of disorder
Delirium of disorder
Delirium of disorder
Delirium of disorder

Phil Ochs - Doesn't Lenny Live Here Anymore

I know he wasn't technically part of the punk scene but there are a lot of parallels with what he was doing in the 60's and what his punk predescesors were. The song I have chosen is one of his latter/non-political ones which I guess makes it a lot easier to relate to on a personal level. It is a very sad and beautiful song especially when you think about the mental anguish Phil Ochs was going through at the time.

You laugh at the people who walk outside on the sidewalk
And you talk to yourself so much
when you see other people you can't talk
This time it's true
The charade is through
And you can't seem to run away from you
Away from you
And the haggard ex-lover of a long-time loser
Stands rejectedly by the door
Doesn't Lenny live here anymore?
Are you sure?

You sit at the desk
To lose your life in a letter
But the words don't seem to come and you know that they're(?) better
and it's all so strange
Pictures lose their frame
And I'll bet you never guessed
There was so much pain
So much pain
Until the haggard ex-lover of a long-time loser
Stands rejectedly by the door
Doesn't Lenny live here anymore?
Are you sure?

The moon, she shines too soon and simply sadly
You loved your love so much that you'd strangle her madly
And it's all so slow
Time has ceased to flow
And the whistling ***** knows something you don't know
And the haggard ex-lover of a long-time loser
Stands rejectedly by the door
Doesn't Lenny live here anymore?
Are you sure?

You swore you'd store your love for one time only
Now you searched the books in vain for better word for lonely
And you're torn apart
No other love will start
And you, you'd like to steal a happy heart
A happy heart
Then the haggard ex-lover of a long-time loser
Stands rejectedly by the door
Doesn't Lenny live here anymore?
Are you sure?

The fat official smiles at the pass on the border
And the hungry broom makes sure that the room is in order
You pull the shade
All the beds are made
As your lips caress the razor of the blade
Of the blade
And the haggard ex-lover of a long-time loser
Stands rejectedly by the door
Doesn't Lenny live here anymore?
Are you sure?

The soul of the sun shines just outsde of the winter
The shoulders charged, the boards of the barricade is splintered
Now at last alone
The flashlight is shown
Hello inside is there anybody home?
Anybody home?
It's the haggard ex-lover of a long-time loser
Standing rejectedly by the door
Doesn't Lenny live here anymore?
Are you sure?
Are you sure?
Are you sure?

Oh man! If we're using the Smiths, I'm so throwing Plese, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want This Time into the mix. That's such a beautiful song.

I also really love the way Richard Hell delivers the vocals on Another World and Betrayal Takes Two. He sounds so desperate.
