just wondering does this matter so much as it does on guitar because yesterday i switched the strings off my jbass because i got it used and the guy i bought it from is 95% of the time guitar so he didnt change his strings on his bass often but noticed that i was changing gauge

i have ernie ball regular slinkys on now i have no idea what was on there before

Heavier string gauges... ie fatter. are used mostly when players like to downtune. regular slinkys are ok for standard tuning and arn't bad if you want to drop the low e to a d. The only thing that you might need to adjust is the truss rod depending if there is much buzz between the first and 6th fret.
