i can't quite remember if it was a poem or a short story, but the gist of it involved a man leaving his home in the evening to take a walk through the woods. He ends up running into the devil (in disguise or not, i can't remember), which leads to some odd events, eventually culminating in some moment that causes him to lose his wife or something. After the climax of the forest journey (ended in some ritual or something, and if i remember correctly, it involved many of the townsfolk), he comes to the end of the forest, ending up in town. He finds his wife there, unharmed, and greets her ambivalently.

can anyone come up with any poems or short stories that match this description? I'd search it in a database, but i can't come up with any excerpts from the text itself.
I think it's called "The Devil and Tom Walker"...
