Something he actually likes would be a good place to start; find out what kind of music he listens to and try teaching him that.

Or if all else fails go for "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd.

Dude, you quoted Kurt Cobain as saying "It's better to burn out than fade away"? Guess again. It was Neil Young, and he sang that a hell of a long time before Cobain ever got into the music biz. FYI

At no point does his signature say that the quote originated from Kurt, he just prefers that use so leave him alone.

Pop-Punk for the win

And btw Mr Peace Frog, Kurt Kobain didn't come up with It's better to burn out, he was quoting part of a Neil Young song.

Why not teach him some chords and the names of them, then do songs which use those chords?
#32
Find out what bands he likes and the simpler songs for those bands and teach him those. Seriously, its the best way to inspire him to play.

Prove me wrong then. Zappa's quote is right, Page's quote is right, Cobain's isn't. Just pointing it out to him is all. And I don't believe I was talking to you in the first place, mind your own business.

You had nothing to contribute to the thread, why did you post in the first place? Anyway, I never said it wasn't originally from anything, I just said that obviously he prefers to quote it from Kurt Cobain rather than Neil Young so stop being an arsehole. I might just put it in my sig as being from The Kurgan in Highlander just to annoy you.

I second this one and Zaphod_Beeblebr's suggestion. Learning an instrument tends to become a drag when teachers force you to play music you can't relate to. It's much more stimulating to immediately work on songs you desperately want to hear yourself play.
If your brothers' musical taste is rather advanced there's nothing in your way of reworking a song he loves into an etude matching his next-week abilitys. As an extra bonus this will give you a nice oppertunity to work on your own arranging skills.
