it's not different, the people that play it on the radio, listen to it, and write it for some reason feel like they have to be doing something different--new-- and they realize that they suck as musicians and can't actually make something good and new, so they make up a category for their new--unoriginal music so they can feel like they are doing something more important than just making "rock" music

so basically anyone with a telecaster and a fuzz pedal can make alternate rock?

well, maybe. but only a few can make good "alternative" music.

Alt-rock is really more of a loose collection of genres than a unified style, but the one thing most, if not all, alternative has in common is a punk influence. And even that barely holds true anymore. It's basically just a radio format nowadays, just like "classic rock," which isn't even less of a real genre.
