While I'm a big fan of Rush I've got to say I dislike the sometimes tiny sounding tone of Alex.
#2
I love Randy Rhoads, but thanks to amazing 80's technology, his tone sounds like a cardboard box.

Same applies to the guitar tones on Kiss' Unmasked record. Strange how recorded guitar tones before 1980 always sounded fuller. They probably went to some new technology that year.

Slash is an ok guitarist but his tone is complete shit.

Fixed.

I really don't like the guitar tone on Machine Head's Burn my Eyes, despite how awesome that album is.

A lot of people dislike Alexi Laiho's but I don't mind it. Randy Rhoads' was a bit iffy as well.

As much as I like In Flames I'll have to admit that their tone is pretty shitty.

Im the same way about metallica. They're great, but Kirk Hammett uses his wah's way too much....he needs to vary his solos. Alot of them sound too much alike

I agree.

I'm not a huge fan of Vai's either. I mean he's awesome but I can't connect with his tone in the same way I can with David Gilmour's...

You know when you go into a guitar shop to try a guitar and the sales guy plug you into one of those 100 tone presets all of them awful electronic sounding gee whiz fizz boxes? Yeah that's pretty much what Dimebag sounds like. Which is a shame because he wrote some good riffs, but the amp sound actually spoils it a bit for me.

Sometimes SOMETIMES (meaning rarely) kirk hammett. I sometimes dislike scooped mids, sometimes I like them, but it really depends on my mood.

Kirk Hammett. Too thin and undefined.

Alexi Laiho to an extent. Too trebly and "sharp", and a bit too thin.
#24
I don't really like Joe Satriani's tone that much, either. I dunno. It's not bad, but I wouldn't want a tone like his.

Dimebag's tone was sometimes great and sometimes terribly fizzy sounding. On Cowboys from Hell, it's crap.

satches tone is outstanding!
I'd have to disagree with you.
Its always clean and pleasant. Very easy listening in my opinon.

Has anyone else ever heard 80% of tone is in ur hand??? lol

Satch is a great guitarist but his tone sounds so digital. I can almost hear the ones and zeros. It's like he's playing through a thousand Line 6 pedalboards that he just bought at Guitar Center.

Same, but about Lars' drums. In Death Magnetic it just sounds like he Guitar Pro'd them all.

I understand that it's the holy grail of rock tone, but I don't like it for some reason. Maybe because it's right on the border of clean and crunchy.
My favourite tone would be a huge, roaring overdrive with plenty of attack and a good-sized midrange. See: Opeth and recent Motorhead.

Like on crystal planet and engines on creation, It did sound very digital.

His live tone is good tho.

The notes go by too fast, IMO its hard to even hear what their tone IS.

I also kind of like Dragonforce.

His early, Surfing with the Alien tone sounded digital, simply because it was. He used a Sansamp on a lot of the tracks, I think.

Now that I think about it, he has a different tone on every song. And I don't really like any of them.

i really dislike metallica's tone on kill 'em all, but after then i like it (excluding st anger of course)
