My buddy came up with this riff, but we can't figure out a scale to use with it. Both of our music theory knowledge is limited.

Any help would be appreciated.

A Phrygian. However, don't feel that you need to remain in A Phrygian for the whole song. Use a lot of the A natural minor scale and Am Pentatonic/Blues scale as well.

Looks like you're sitting in A minor with the Bb being an added tone

What do you mean by added tone?

We were wondering which scale to use to write lead over top of other parts of the song.

You're going to be more concered with the particular rhythm under your lead. bangoodcharlote is on the right track, dont limit yourself to a particular scale, and definatly dont listen to anybody on this forum as to which sound to go for. Your song will most likely sit in the key of A minor. Look up some appropriate scales to work with in that area and you'll definatly come up with something good.
