Find some old Bob Ross - "The Joy of Painting" videos (youtube doesnt have many..) and watch them. This guy makes you want to paint even more and make it look so easy...

acrylic paint and canvas is the way to go. Most art supply shops will have these materials and they make framed canvas which is nice.

i don't think he paints the 'correct' way, though. He doesn't do all the layering and such that professional painters do.

It depends on what kind of painting you want to do.

Experiment; see what works and what doesn't. But to start, you can't go wrong with Acrylic.
