I don't know where else to put this, so i came here.

Ok, so i just read that UG article with the new setlist for the new GH game coming out, and i looked at the projected setlists for Rock Band 2, and now because of some of the artists on them, i am pretty much against any GH game anymore.

I have been playing them pretty much since GH1 came out, and i have been playing guitar for way longer than that. Immediately i thought that these games had nothing to do with playing guitar (which is pretty obvious) but i went along with it anyways.

Now i look at the setlists and i see some of my favorite artists on there (Dream Theater, Joe Satriani, etc) and i think to myself: "is the rest of society going to become fans of them?" Personally, i think the fact that very few of my friends even know who these people are, much less listen to their music, makes me feel more of an individual (im not really sure how i want to word this, but i think you might get the idea). But if everyone i know all of a sudden becomes fans of Dream Theater, i think it takes away some of their coolness, if you know what i mean.

Prime example: When GH2 was out, someone hacked into their ps2 and created a "through the fire and flames" song himself. I thought that was really cool that someone could do that. Now, its a bonus song on GH3, and everyone knows who dragonforce is. I'm not really a fan of Dragonforce, but now i wouldn't even want to be just because lots of people know who they are.

i guess what i am trying to say is that people shouldn't base their musical preference based on what is mainstream or what their friends like. Me and my three best friends, our favorite bands are Dream Theater, Brand New, N.E.R.D, and 311. I don't think that any one of these bands sounds like the other. But if you have 4 best friends that all have a favorite band of, lets say, Avenged Sevenfold (i mean no discredit to them, i don't listen to them very much so i have no opinion on their talent), it narrows your musical spectrum.

Am i being selfish, or are there people out there who agree with me?

sorry for the long text.

You are kind of selfish, but I know what you mean. There is a sense of pride in finding a little band that you can put in your back pocket and keep for yourself. But sometimes they grow to big for your back pocket and everyone knows.

I think it's a good thing. I'd like to see a resurgence.

Hell, I'd find it hilarious if tools were arguing about whether Steve Vai or Malmsteen was better.

What keeps me happy is being able to find my own deeper meaning then just the hooks that are the sex appeal for most artists/songs

how about you like a band regardless of whether they are popular in the mainstream or not. listen to what you think sounds good, douchebag

no, it not that i don't want other people to like them, it's that i don't want someone to like a band for the wrong reason, and i believe that "because they are on GH" is the wrong reason.

Dude, i hate that when you're like the only person who likes a band, and then all ur friends suddenly like them as well. I'm always like "dude you should ****in listen to this shit! ITS AWESOME." and i give them an earphone from my iPod, and they're like "what band is this?" and i'll tell them, then they're like "oh yeah they have a song on guitar hero/rockband..." or "oh yeah this song's from rockband!"

It pisses me off that they ****in think rockband or guitar hero owns all the music on the game, and they completely avoid the band and give rockband/guitar hero all the credit. Punch 'em in the face >:O

Well, I understand a little bit. Like you said, certain bands lose their "coolness" when everyone knows who they are.

And I agree with what Patty-cakez said.

Not liking a band because they're popular is the cancer that's killing good music. Stop it.

Exactly. For example, Metallica put out the black album and people started talking about how they hated Metallica for becoming popular, **** that, the black album was their best work to date. Same with A7X and their most recent album. Good music is good music and that should be way ahead of how popular a band is.

I know what you mean because knowing a band before eveyone else does makes it a little more personal and unique. But your arguement is extremely childish. You think these bands should stay underground just because you want to feel special? These bands want to become recognized. They want as many people to enjoy their music as possible.

hey whatever, ill keep listening to the shit i have, like.. iron maiden songs were on the two last games, still iron maiden hasnt turned mainstream.
Dream Theater may be liked for some months, but they are not making hiphop, so i think they will be like an outsider band forever.

I think you're overreacting quite a bit. If anyone has only friends that only "like a song because it's in Guitar Hero", then too bad for them, move on and find people with better "interest" in music if you feel that way. I don't pay that much attention to other people's opinions. I'll be honest, there's a few bands that I discovered by playing Guitar Hero/Rock band such as Muse and Dragonforce. Not that I like Dragonforce, I think they're a bunch of posers. I like Muse though. All that being said, it hasn't really affected my main interests in music. My favorite bands are Queen, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Zeppelin, Ozzy/Sabbath. Those guys were "big" before Guitar hero and such. Anyway stop being so selfish about some band(s). Who cares if some kid is gonna pretend he likes Dream Theather "cause it's in Rock band".

thats exactly what i mean. If someone goes out and listens to a band because they were on GH, i guess i'm ok with that.

but what i'm seeing is that i shouldn't care about someone else's musical preferences, just my own. but i am glad that there are some people out there that agree with me.

stop trying to define yourself based on the musical accomplishments of other people. that's just stupid.

selfish twit. why do you care what other people listen to? or are you just one of those homos who only likes something because its obscure?

If more people discover great music like Dream Theater, that'll be awesome, regardless of how they discover it. Finding bands like Tool and Dream Theater might actually inspire people to put down those crappy plastic controllers and become REAL musicians.
Am I offended by the thought that some trendy, musically ignorant ass hat will find that music and think he's a badass because he played it on Guitar Hero? Yes, as a matter of fact I am, but if they make music with great musicianship available to people with an interest in music, it might push some towards picking up a real instrument, which is always good.

EDIT: And for the record, Dragonforce blows goats, so they need all the help they can get.

Dude you need to grow up. Other people besides your '3 Best Friends' liking the same music as you is actually a good thing. Don't fall into the trap of becoming a music snob.

youre not overreacting, i think it is pretty stupid that they are showing these songs "Satch Boogie" and many others to the public, at least with the 3rd game they made it so you had to buy surfing with the alien (my favorite song)

i can relate.

i hate when too many people in my area listen to what i like (there are a lot of preppy frat boys), but when it's with close friends, i don't mind as much. even still, the best compliments i've had are pertaining to my taste in music that most people don't know. at least you'll be able to fire back knowledge about their other songs that they don't know.
