You guys know the drill, it's just that I'm inexpirienced and need other peoples opinions on this.

He plays shit from as clean as Grateful dead to heavy as Metallica ( I think he needs an amp that can get heavy as metallica with an OD rather than stock gain)

Under 400 usd, in a band environment

My ideas

Crate V50 with OD
used C30 with an OD
Valveking with a tubeswap
used Crate Blue Voodoo
used Seymour Duncan Converitble
used Peavey VTM
used Peavey Ultra

I'd say either the used Ultra or a used VK + tube + speaker swap. A used VK runs about... $250, and some tubes would be $50 as well. A new speaker would probably run about $100, too (unless you get a WGS Veteran 30, like I did - $60.00 for superior quality to a Vintage 30 )

Also, a VK can probably get Metallica-level gain on its own when cranked.

Greg what did you send me??

Sounds like he wants a British amp. I'd say used Laney LC15 but it's not easy to get used Laneys in the US... So I guess Classic 30 with an OD might be a good idea.

The V50 can get Metallica on it's own, but there's nothing wrong with pairing it up with a nice OD like the Visual Sound Double Trouble.

I can get pretty much all but the heaviest kinda of metal out of my Palomino with my DT, but what I normally do is run it clean and use the DT as a channel 2/sometimes 3.

hmm...

Seems the Ultra looks to be nice, has a good british feel and all that,
A used VK with a tube/speaker swap looks like a good idea.

i'm unsure of the V50's reliability...

What about the Blue Voodoo?

I wouldn't say the Ultra has a British feel at all...

You can try to find a Windsor. They go for around that price used.

As far as Crates, the V33 would be better for the sounds he wants. You can get the 1/4 stack for 300.

Could the V33 do metallica with an overdrive pedal?

Most definitely. It's very comparable to the Classic 30, but I personally like the tone better.

I like the C30 better but to each his own.
Yes it can do it, as can the classic 30. Plus both have very nice cleans

The V33 looks like a good option for him, he seemed like he rfeally liked the combo...

I'd have to say that I think the V33 is better as well.

And as a side note it can get up to Metallica on its own, but it's a bit of a push.
