our problem is that we all have big amps and he needs one cuz he never really had one

What is your definition of cheap?

I don't think you'll get anything good for extremely cheap...

I play metal and I using a cube 100 till I save enough for a trace elliot
The Cube costs about 400 euro I dont know how much they sell for in dollars.
It has a wide variety of differnt effects and provides excelent sound for different
styles like jazz and and funk too Its compact and light making it easy to transport
and produces a big enugh sound to keep up with my and mates 200 wat marshalls
I think for an affordable good quality amp that can be used for gigging it's one worth buying

*Edit* I didnt see you price range but if your bassist is will to stretch to buy one it is very reasonable price for such a good amp and a sound investment IMO

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

$250? Thats not gonna get too much but I think an Ashdown would be decent however I'm not to sure on there prices for the lower stuff. My MAG300 (300w) was £250 (about $450/500) so I expect a EB180 (180 watts and pretty decent) would be like.. $250/300 at a guess. I would check but I'm on a school PC and they don't allow shopping sites but they allow UG, which is odd.
Gear:

Musicman SUB 5
Ibanez SRX305
Ibanez GSR200
Ashdown MAG300 C115
Ashdown MAG 210 cab

Soon a Fender Deluxe Jazz V & an LTD 206

you arent gonna get anything good at that volume for that price new....

I would suggest looking secondhand, or else increasing your budget
