Hey All,
So in a couple months I have to play 3 pieces of music for my college, 2 I've picked (one modal swing and one blues) and now I have a 3rd choice of a "Contemporary style."
I chose metal.
So I guess the only thing is that I'd enjoy playing a song that either has a bass solo, or a great bass line to compliment the song, and my playing.

So far, I've had a couple of thoughts, including:

Into Eternity - Beginning of the End
Necrophagist - Only Ash Remains
Protest The Hero - Bone Marrow
Something by Angra
Something by Blind Guardian
Something by Bodom
Something by Ensiferum
Something by Helloween

Basically I guess something power metal, melodeath or generally melodic... I'm not sure, just wanted to hear some opinions!
Thx

That's a good one too, my roomie saw Cynic at Wacken and I'm pretty sure he has this cd, I'll give that a listen.

Most people would be damn impressed if you could play Frantic Disembowelment at full speed.

Only Ash Remains would be great if you have a 6 stringer and enough technical competence.

Frantic Disembowelment would be interesting, but I can't stand listening to it.

If I can't listen to it, I won't play it is a pretty simple rule - hence why I barred Cannibal Corpse lol.

The point of underground bands is their not popular or famous most of the time. Thus there is a good chance they suck.

true, or even Brain Drill if you like insanely hard things. Necrophagist and Spastik Ink deserve a mention as well.

But then again, if you don't like CC, Necrophagist isn't your cup of proverbial tea.

Brain Drill is a tech-death band in the vein of Atheist, but probably a bit more complex. Spastik Ink is Ron Jarzombeck's project band, and its chock full of difficult material with a nightmare of time signatures.

Atheist is cool though, Mother Man might be impressive to play.

Try "The Call of Ktulu" by Metallica. The bassline to the song is great if it doesn't overpower the guitars, it gives a semi-eery feel to the song. Also, try some old-school Dimmu Borgir from the For All Tid or Stormblast era. Very nice bass work. Some songs to check out are Under Korpens Vinger, Broderskapets Ring, Da Den Kristne Satte Livet Til, Stormblast, and Antikrist. Specifically, the last two. Also check out "The Insight and the Catharsis" by them. I'm amazed no one has mentioned Iron Maiden's "Phantom of the Opera" yet, either. That should display some technical proficiency for anyone if you can keep it in time the length of the entire song.

EDIT: Almost forgot "Dodsferd" by Dimmu also, the very end part of the song has a cool bass riff with some delay in it. It also supports one of the coolest, most majestic keyboard lines in metal history if you ask me

granted, that is probably the only song on this list I recognize, I'm not a metal hater, but I vastly prefer my blues.

Don't do Protest the Hero, or "Only Ash Remains". Those are my two suggestions for you. Do something like Cynic, or Atheist.
Fail! It has some sweet slapping licks in that song :O but yeah cynic and atheist make children in Africa starve because the bass lines are too good.
