I don't really think it's important, a real song would be much more awesome, but I do pretty much know it. If there is music playing (words aren't needed) I can sing it.

Yea, it's weird.
I find it funny listening to all the English people at sports games pronounce everything wrong.

Yeah, I think I know O Canada or whatever. It's OK but not great. I'd prefer it if they used The Maple Leaf Forever but with the respectful lyrics written by Vladimir Radian. It's much better.

France, Italy and Portugal have the best national anthems. The Portuguese one especially because it ends in a certain way that lets you go from singing to yelling at football matches. Like...

Do di do do do... di da-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!!

I'm pretty sure England dosnt have an "offical" anthem. I could be mistaken though.

I think the same when I hear Americans speak in general. However, that's the way linguistics works, can't be assed to get into the details...

And yeah, 'God Save Our Queen' is a pile of pointless drivel, not to mention I'd dislike it even if it was a good song thanks to my raging anti-nationalism.

i know both the American and Greek national anthems.

i personally do think that they are important in the sense that you live in the country, you're allowed a home, food, water, hopefully good health and protection....the least you can do is sing a 3 minute tune out of respect for all you're given. that is.....if you like your country of course....

I love our anthem! Yours rocks, too. I love how they sing both when there are an American and Canadian hockey team playing against each other.

Mexico's national anthem (my country's) is written in like archaic Spanish, like Beowulf English, it's really hard to understand. The tune is meh, I think I like France's music the best.

In three part harmony, actually.

...Although there's no way I still remember the alto part...

And yeah, I think it's important to at least know the words to it by the time you graduate high school. (I don't, however, think it's important to put your hand over your heart when it's playing. Just take your damn hat off and pay attention. [/shameless political plug])

The UK/British/English (I don't even know which, shows how dodgy things are) just reminds me that at the head of my government we have a monarchy, which is just ****ing ridiculous.

Broadly speaking, "no one chooses his or her country of birth, so its foolish to be proud of it".
I don't know when I would ever need to sing the national anthem.
Flags have a purpose, it's a visual symbol for a state.
A song? That's just a way to stir up emotion in people.

But you pay the taxes. I assume you live in a liberal democracy. Government is supposed to gain its legal sovereignty from below. Elections allow the government to rule, in the name of the people. THEY WORK FOR YOU! Don't think of the government as your master, it's supposed to be the physical form of mass consent.
I'm sorry I can't put it more eloquently.

Quote by Craigo
Borders have given me nothing.

I normally agree with you, but I'm sure they give some benefit. Borders and countries allow for a country which is governed more practically. If there was just no countries, surely any government that did exist would be impractical? I know it's just devolution on a national scale...

I'm struggling for arguments, but I'm sure the world wouldn't be better without countries. Nationalism is foolish, yeah. But a legal state is a good thing.
For a socialist government, you need the state to control the means of production.

I know the tune. That counts right? And usually I could get away with moving my mouth when we had to sing it in high school... but that's what most people did... leave the singing to the school choir.

Only the first verse, apparently there are 3. Unfortunately is boring and dull.
Actually, I remember a comedian (Adam Hill I think is was) sang it to the tune of working class man by Jimmy Barnes. It was a shit load better.

I think this is it. I can't view youtube at work though.
