Firewind, Dream Evil, Hammerfall, Stratovarius, Nocturnal Rites, Steel Attack, Edguy, Freternia, Thunderstone are all top notch Power Metal bands

Power Metal can get really gay really fast. 90% of Power Metal is quite generic and lame sounding. But the remaining 10% is amazing and nothing less. BG occupies 9% of that by the way. Hellloween, Savatage, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Edguy, Heavenly, Falconer, etc. can go in the other 1%.

Pretty good list, I'd add Jag Panzer, Thunderstone and Iron Savior for the non generic bands up there aswell.

Want your help. I listen to these bands, but nothing really stands out to me -

Altaria
Avantasia
Axxis
Battlelore
Blind Guardian
Dark Illusion
Dark Moor
Darna
Demons & Wizards
Dragonforce
Dragonheart
Dragonland
Drakkar
Dream Evil
Edenbridge
Edguy
Falconer
Firewind
Freedom Call
Gamma Ray
Grendel
Hammerfall
Helloween
Hibria
Iron Savior
Kiaus
Luca Turilli
Machine Men
Mystic Prophecy
Nightmare
Pegazus
Powerwolf
Rage
Rhapsody (of Fire)
Singery
Skylark
Spellblast
Stormhammer
Thy Majestie
Timo Kotipelto
Twilightning
Warmen
White Skull

I need something that has the nice low soothing vocals of Falconer, but really aggressive guitar work and great drumming. Nothing like Nevermore, has to still fit power metal. If I listen a band there or something, tell me what album and I'll check it out.

Cheers.

Nothing really stands out from that list to you?

Power metal isn't your thing then.

Alright, thanks guys. Problem is, for someone who doesn't have much exposure to it (except for the fact I have heaps), it all sounds very similar, like my hardcore would to you guys.

I get into Power Metal moods, I'll listen to more of this with more attention then. Also, I'm not saying I don't like any of it, but nothing is amazing to me.

Thanks anyway.

Kamelot
Dark Moor
Thunderstone

Thanks man, yeah, I left Iced Earth out because I consider them more thrash. But I listen to most of those bands. I'm listening to to Blind Guardian - Mirror Mirror right now.

I'll check it when I have a chance, thanks Phill.

If you go away liking just one of those bands, it should be Blind Guardian.

For Blind Guardian, listen to Another Holy War, Valhalla, Punishment Divine, A Script for My Requiem, the bard's song (both of them), Beyond the ice, Lost In The Twilight Hall, Traveler in Time, Time what is Time, and finally And Then There Was Silence.

If I was recommending BG songs to listen to, I'd say: Valhalla, Born in a Mourning Hall, Mirror Mirror, Majesty, Trial by the Archon/Wizard's Crown, Don't Break the Circle, I'm Alive, Battlefield, Welcome to Dying, Nightfall, Sadly Sings Destiny etc.

Edit: AA meeting?

We don't really have alcoholics here...

Only one on that list that stands out to me is Dream-Evil.

Defenitly check out;
Symphony X
Iced Earth
Angra

Or Maybe don't listen to me because i know nothing of Power Metal outside of Symphony X, Iced Earth and Dream-Evil
#102
True, Freedom Call falls in with the "cheesy lyrics" bunch (which is why I like Sonata Arctica, for their awesome lyrics. )

but they are a great, consistent band.

Also, to the guy who's searching for more power metal, try Dreamtale. They're not amazing, but I enjoy them very much.

If you want to try a song of their so ease into them <- sodomy try "Wings of Icarus" off of the album Difference. Great album.

HammerFall may be one of the cheesiest power metal bands around, but damn they kick ass. The music is fairly simple, but they have some incredibly epic/catchy moments.

Saw 3 power metal bands live last night: Valediction (local band) supporting Firewind and Kiuas.

Amazing show.

Now to go to Kiuas and Firewind's threads to post almost identical comments in each.

Kiuas, Kamelot, Blind Guardian and Firewind ftw.

Also, Pain of Salvation, are they power or more of a proggy band?
You shall listen to Kamelot.

I am jelous of you Phill. I want my Greek and Irish power metals. There's an upcoming Kamelot/Edguy show that I was planning to go to, until I found out I'm underage to even enter the club. Sometimes it really sucks being under 18.
