So I'm moving into my flat at Leeds University on saturday.
I was thinking of going looking for some last minute essentials, but I have no idea what I'd look for.

Does anyone who's been to uni or is going this time have any recomendations of things that would be useful?

I'm living in self-catered halls.
I already have pans, bedding, cutlery, a cheese grater, sieve, wooden spoon and some other things I can't remember.
I've seen some things suggested that I don't have, like a lamp for my room, or a "washing horse" I think it might be called that I'd hang wet clothes on. I've also seen mini-fridges suggested, but I can't afford on to be honest.
Did anyone find these useful or manage without them?
#2
I'm in the same boat as you, I'm thinking bout picking up a laundry bag of sorts tomorrow fore i go.
#3
Yeah one of them crossed my mind.
Duno whether to look at Asda where I can use my staff discount or just go to the cheaper shops like Home Bargains and £ shops etc.
#6
All you need is something to sleep on, something to cook ramen in and something to keep your beer cold.

Condoms + chloroform, maybe a paper bag for the ugos

A breville and a george forman is all you need.
He's right. Those are essentials.

A minor thing: you'll want a doorstop.

You can get radiator clothes horses, they rock and take up very little room even when coverd in clothes. Padlock for your cupboard! Padlock! Padlock! PADLOCK! - your food will get stolen and it will piss you off.

Which block are you staying in? I live/work very close to a load of the blocks, I can show you round Leeds if you want.

50 packets of supernoodles

I've seen doorstop mentioned before.
Is this to invite your flatmates round without having to invite them round in the first few days?
I've lost all the letters I got from the uni. Didn't think about that. Found the student finance ones though.

And I'm in Leodis Residences.
#16
Well all the doors in halls are heavy fireproof doors that often lock themselves when they close. You've gotta wedge them open for social reasons and for convenience.

when I moved in they already provided a lamp along with the sheets

drying rack => if you're cheap just get a long piece of string and tie it onto the balcony somewhere
or they might provide you with clothes dryers anyway (but sometimes they do a shitty job at drying your clothes and you have to put them up to dry anyway)

get some basic tools, screwdriver, pliers
if you plan on getting around on a bicycle one of those multitool thingies with a bunch of wrenches on it and such
#25
Just take stuff you think you'll need and then buy other stuff when you need it.

I didn't have a bin for about a week when I started.

Ooo, and a tool kit.

Beer Bong

But be careful with the wine

Haha was out like a light after that.
Just been up Leigh, but didnt think of a beer bong!
I'll have to get the equipment from Asda on saturday
#28
Been and got myself a doorstop now.
And some vimto.
Nuts
Chopping Board
Toothbrush
4 pint glasses for 99p!
Tried buying a knife, but they wouldn't let me coz I didn't have my ID on me. Passed my driving test last week so had to send off my provisional.
#29
I don't know why people keep telling you to buy a doorstop, just fold up a piece of card.

Also, I'd recommend a linen basket, otherwise all your dirty clothes will just be littered all over.

Apart from that , just make sure you have everything kitchen wise, look through the cupboards at home to jog your memory of everything you will need. The small stuff, like knife sharpener and corkscrew and the things you'll end up forgetting. The fridge is a waste of money in my opinion, cos they don't cool things like a proper fridge and you'll be sharing beer with each other anyway. It'll just take up room.

ditto on the doorstop thing....any object that has mass can be used as a doorstop

cheapness: screw the linen basket, just use a plastic bag

how often do you have to sharpen a kitchen knife?

corkscrew -> swiss army knife
#32
you only need two things.. condoms and a beer fridge. You can last a solid 4 years on that
#33
Definately get a George Forman grill.
Most used thing last year in uni. Plus it makes great food.

Got about £40 to take me half way through Freshers week when I get my loan.
Definately gona be takin advantage of my student account overdraft
#35
A vegetarian???

Haha £40's not gonna last you through freshers week!

Make sure you find a job, did wonders for me last year, everyone else was in their overdraft and I was raking it in.
