in the past couple days my amp has had wierd volume fluctuations and occasionally been making a crackling noises

are the power tubes on their way out? they're also glowing a darkish orange, and i cant remember the color indicators for tube life?? if its not the tubes, what could potentially be the cause for the volume fluctuations? it's not anything in the loop or the guitar wiring because it was fine just a few days ago.

get a cheap marshall... my MG15DFX has a button that simulates the sound of one of the expensive tube marshall amps.

Theres a good chance it the power tubes, is one glowing brighter than the other? It could also be a preamp tube.

Try swapping your preamp tubes around, if you have a bad one in an input stage you'll notice a bigger difference than if it was in say your phase splitter.

If its the preamp tubes it probably one of the input stages (check your manual to figure out which those are) and can probably be easily solved with one 10 dollar tube. Even if only one power tube is bad you still need to replace both since they need to be a matched pair.

alright so i tried pulling power tubes. pulling the outer ones did the trick. no more volume fluctutations. i havent played the amp enough since pulling them to see if the crackling really was the pre amp tubes but the amp problem is solved now(for the most part)

thanks for the advice, kevin saale
